Consume in Extreme Moderation
While the FDA approves of these preservatives
in moderate consumption, some are known to
be more harmful than others. Sodium
nitrite/nitrate is the preservative used in
processed meats and may have cancer-causing
effects, especially if consumed in high amounts.
Sodium benzonate and artificial food colorings
might heighten hyperactivity in children. BHT
has been banned in some countries as a
carcinogen.
All processed foods should be consumed in
extreme moderation. It’s best to stick to foods
that have been minimally processed for optimal
health.

COMMON
PRESERVATIVES
The most common preservatives sold in the market
and used to preserve various foods are benzoates,
which are generally present in sodium benzoate or
more soluble potassium benzoate. Benzoate is
often used to preserve various foods and
beverages such as fruit juice, soft drinks, ketchup,
chili sauce, jam and jelly, sweets, soy sauce and etc.
The use of preservatives in food should be
appropriate both types and dosage. A preservative
may be effective in preserving certain foods, but it
is ineffective in preserving other foods because
they have different properties-so that the
destructive microbes that are inhibited by their
growth are also different.

MARKET SCENARIO
Global Food Preservatives Market was valued at $2,271
million in 2016, and is expected to reach $2,714 million by
2023, registering a CAGR of 2.6% from 2017 to 2023.
Most people prefer ready-to-eat food available in the
market rather than preparing it at home. These foods
contain various additives and preservatives to maintain
the quality and to reduce the spoilage by various
microorganisms, which is expected to surge the demand
for food preservatives in the near future. The health
hazards associated with these food preservatives are
expected to restrain the market growth during the
forecast period. Benzoates cause nausea and diarrhea,
whereas saccharin is expected to lead to toxic reactions
that affect the gastrointestinal tract and heart. Similarly,
sodium chloride leads to high blood pressure, stroke,
kidney failure, and heart attack.
