2. CHARACTER TYPES
• Protagonist- Usually the ‘chosen’ victim and hero of the film
• Villain/Antagonist- Serial killer, villain might have some sort of disfigurement
• Stereotypical teens- That are murdered due to their own stupidity
• Creepy/strange children
3. THEMES
• Religion- Usually has either a sacrificial or exorcism element to it
• Supernatural
• Apocalypse/ Post-apocalyptic world
• Insanity
• Revenge
• Bad childhood
• Good vs evil
• Envy

4. LIGHTING
• Lighting tends to be low-key to create tension and possibly cast unfamiliar shadows.
• Sometimes the only source of light is natural, such as a bonfire or it can also be small
artificial sources such as torches. Both of which only cast minimal lighting.
5. COSTUME
• In many horrors the costume could be described as ‘everyday’, this is possibly to add
realism into the film. However, the villain usually has something that makes them a lot
more identifiable such as a mask or a particular weapon.

6. SETTING
• Isolated villages with small communities, dark alleyways with nowhere to run, ghost
towns, derelict houses, abandoned buildings such as an insane asylum. The main focus
tends to be on isolation.
