Completion and Workover at OU
December 3, 2015 MPGE
The inaugural edition of PE 5970 Completion and Workover, offered by Associate Professor Catalin Teodoriu, has
been a success. This is a new course within the University of Oklahoma (OU) Mewbourne School of Petroleum
and Geological Engineering (MPGE) graduate curriculum that was developed over the span of a decade by
Teodoriu and taught at four different universities worldwide. As one of the few petroleum engineering courses that
focuses on wellbore equipment and mechanics, it has been a popular choice among students. Design of the
course began in 2005 as part of the Drilling and Production master’s program at Clausthal University of
Technology in Germany, and was later adapted for graduate studies at Texas A&M. Short versions of Completion
and Workover have been delivered at Leoben University in Austria, Oil and Gas University of Ploiesti, Romania
and several times within the oil and gas industry with great feedback.
Ten years later, Teodoriu’s Completions and Workover course has found a home at OU. It is offered during the fall
semester, and presents to students the latest developments of completion and workover hardware and equipment
as well as an overview of completions and workover methods in the oil and gas industry. It is designed to
complement MPGE’s other courses on drilling and production engineering. While taking the course, students learn
about design options to meet deliverability, safety and integrity requirements during completions and workover
operations, the main components of a well are described and analyzed by their function and design criteria,
workover systems and procedures are presented and discussed, case studies are provided and a class project
helps students understand the handson aspects of completions and workover. Additionally, this course offers
students an introduction to special well completions focused, for example, on geothermal exploitation or high
pressure/hightemperature (HPHT) challenges. A major focus is well integrity, which gives students an inside look
at the research performed at MPGE’s new Well Integrity Center.
With thanks to Paul Horn GmbH (www.phorn.de) as sponsor, a prize was given to the team that made the best
presentation. This year’s winning team is The Secret Team (Laura Salcedo, Shadi Salahshoor, John Xavier,
Garrett Goldsby and Tito Henao) and is a mix of graduate and undergraduate students.
