The Shield of Faith
Ephesians 6:10-18
• 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the
power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God,
that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the
devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,
but against principalities, against powers, against the
rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts
of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take
up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to
withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
• 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth,
having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and
having shod your feet with the preparation of the
gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith
with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts
of the wicked one.
•
Roman Shield
• Best Protection-without the
shield the soldier would not last
long.
• Size: about 2-3 feet across and
feet by 3.5-4 feet long.
• Materials: about six layers of
animal hide that was specially
tanned and woven so tightly it
was almost as strong as steel.
Defensively
Roman Shield
used in two
ways
• Individual fighting
• The shields offered almost
full body protection.
• Soldier could hide behind it
as he changed movements in
battle.
Group Fighting
Sides of shields would lock
together with other soldiers
for a wall of protection.
Like a turtle hiding under its
shell.
We should work as a unit as
Christians and uplift our
brothers and sisters in Christ.
Offensively
Roman Scutum
and Metal Boss
• Soldiers used the scutum offensively to
bash their enemies. A good left hook!
• They would sometimes use the scutum to
lift enemies up off the ground and stab
them.
Defensively

• The shields offered almost
full body protection.
• Soldier could hide behind it

battle.

Above all
• Ephesians 6:16New King James Version
(NKJV)
16 above all, out in front of all your other
weapons, taking the shield of faith with
which you will be able to quench all the
fiery darts of the wicked one.
• The phrase “above all” is taken from the
Greek phrase epi pasin. epi means over.
• pasin means all or everything.
• epi pasin describes the position faith should
have over the other pieces of armor.
• It could be better translated, “Out in front
of all….” or “Covering all….”
• “Above all” tells you that your “shield of
faith” is never meant to be held next to your
side or timidly held behind your back.
• Faith needs to be out front where it
can completely cover you and protect you
from harm. It can never be put down.
Without it you can never be saved, much
less fight the enemy.
• If faith is not in front, doubt will take the
lead.
What happens it you put down your shield?
Shield of Faith • 16 above all, taking the shield
of faith with which you will be
able to quench all the fiery
darts of the wicked one.
• shield, thyreos which was
used by the Greeks and
Romans to depict an oblong
door that was wide in width
and long in length
We need to cover ourselves with
faith.
Since the Roman soldier shield
of faith was made of leather, he
oiled his shield everyday. This
kept the shield soft and pliable.
It not done the shield could
break in battle. Not Good!.
When going into battle you
don’t want your shield of faith
falling apart.
How can you take care of your
shield of faith?
• Ephesians
6:16New King
James Version
(NKJV)
16 above all,
taking the shield
of faith with which
you will be able to
quench all the
fiery darts of the
wicked one.
• The word “quench” in this verse
is the Greek word sbennumi,
which means to quench by
dousing or to extinguish by
drowning in water
• Before a battle a Roman soldier
would soak his shield in a tub
of water and leave it there until
the shield was completely
saturated. This would cause the
fiery arrows to extinguish on
impact.
• As the Roman soldier saturated
his shield, we too, need to keep
our shield of faith saturated
with the word of God and
prayer.
Fiery Darts • Ephesians
6:16New King
James Version
(NKJV)
16 above all, taking
the shield of faith
with which you will
be able to quench
all the fiery darts
of the wicked one.
• “fiery darts” are from the Greek
word belos. It referred to an
arrow with its tip wrapped with
fabric soaked in flammable
fluids so it would burn with hot
flames.
Keeping up your
shield of faith as
well as others
• Hard to keep shield up.
• Pray, believe, rejoice
• When things are weighing heavily
on you:
• An encouraging word
• Look at the blessings
• The savior Has been there done
that
• Right hand of God
In Closing
Romans
8:31-39
• 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against
us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how
shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge
against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is
Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of
God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the
love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or
nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:
• “For Your sake we are killed all day long;
• We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
• 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved
us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor
principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height
nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the
love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

It was about 2 feet across and 4 feet long. He carried the shield in one hand and could move it to protect any part of his body. So it offered protection for almost every part of the soldier’s body. When you know what faith is, you can understand how it can be your shield, your protection from whatever Satan flings at you. Let’s talk about what faith is. It was curved so that spears and arrows would hit it at an angle and bounce off. That same curve also gave the soldier room to move about behind it as his movements changed in battle. Most shields were made from wood and were covered with leather. They were bound around the outside with iron or bronze. They were very strong. A soldier was safer when he was not afraid to hide behind his shield. To get to him, the enemy’s arrows had to get past the shield first and then pierce through the armor that was worn on the soldier’s body. Rick Renner Dressed to Kill pictures of shield in the middle to the book Materials: about six layers of animal hide that was specially tanned and woven so tightly it was almost as strong as steel.

Often a whole regiment of Roman soldiers would lock their shields together over their heads and at their sides. They looked like a giant turtle in a shell. Together, a group of soldiers could move forward and use picks and crowbars to break down a city gate while they were protected on all sides from the enemies' arrows. The shields were used in battle for defence (for example, Vegetius wrote that men had to be trained to handle their shields “to deflect oncoming blows with oblique movements”) but also to push and batter enemies. As examples, Plutarch has Gaius Marius before the battle of Vercellae reminding his men to throw their javelins when the enemy came in range then to “push them back” with their shields. 180 years later, Tacitus describes auxiliaries at the battle of Mons Graupius “striking with the bosses of their shields and mangling the faces of their enemies.” Roman iconography shows shields being used. The column bases at Mainz show two legionaries using their shields in both ways (I just realised you could post images here). The man behind is raising his shield in what looks like a strange pose but this is identical to the way gladiators are shown using theirs. See for example this mosaic from Bad Kreuznach: The en garde pose behind the shield shown on the Mainz column base is also absolutely typical for images of gladiators (not surprisingly). 485 views arrows in

  6. Today I would like to draw your attention to several very important points in this verse. First, I want you to notice the phrase “…wherewith ye shall be able….” The first part of this Greek phrase would be better translated by which. For the words “ye shall be able,” the Greek word used here is the word dunamis, which denotes explosive power or dynamic power and is where we get the word “dynamite.” When these Greek words and phrases are used together as they are in Ephesians 6:16, it could actually be translated, “Above all, taking the shield of faith, by which you will be dynamically empowered.…” Therefore, the phrase “above all” emphatically tells you that your “shield of faith” is never meant to be held next to your side or timidly held behind your back. Faith is supposed to be out front where it can completely cover you and protect you from harm — especially when you are marching forward to take new ground for the Kingdom of God! With the imagery of a Roman soldier before him, Paul used the Roman soldier’s shield to illustrate the shield of faith that God has provided for you and me. The word “shield” is the Greek word thureos, which was used by the Greeks and Romans to depict an oblong door that was wide in width and long in length. The reason the Roman soldiers used this word to describe their battle shields was that the shields were door-shaped. They were wide in width and long in length; just like the door of a house.

  8. The word “quench” in this verse is the Greek word sbennumi, which means to quench by dousing or to extinguish by drowning in water. It refers to the water-soaked shield of Roman soldiers. You see, before Roman soldiers went out to battle, they purposely soaked their shields in water until they were completely water-saturated. The soldiers did this because they knew the enemy would be shooting fire-bearing arrows in their direction. If a shield was dry, it was possible for it to be set on fire when struck. But if this vital piece of armor was water-soaked, the flames would be extinguished even if an arrow penetrated its heavily saturated surface. How does this apply to us as believers? Well, Romans 10:17 says that our faith is increased by hearing the Word of God. In Ephesians 5:26, the Word of God is likened to water. So as we regularly submit ourselves to the Word of God, we soak our faith with the Word just as a Roman soldier soaked his shield with water. And when our faith becomes Word-saturated or Word-soaked, it becomes just like the soldier’s water-saturated shield. In other words, it will be so heavily inundated with the water of God’s Word that even if a fiery dart pierces our shield, the huge amount of Word in us will extinguish the flames and put out a potentially damaging situation! The only visible part of you is your faith. – The Mirror Study Bible * “thureos” means a door sized shield. To co-believe with God protects your whole person, body, soul and spirit. See 2 Corinthians 5: 7. Ephesians 6:16 With your shield of faith lifted high in front of you, you can be assured that you can extinguish every fiery dart of the wicked one. You will be supernaturally empowered to defend yourself against every one of the enemy’s fiery darts. A better translation is literally, “by which you shall be able.” The word “able” is from the Greek word “dynamos” which denotes explosive power or dynamic power. It is where we get the word dynamite. The verse could be translated,”Above all, taking the shield of faith, by which you will be dynamically empowered.” That shield of faith held properly in front of the believer, held high, divinely energizes the believer to stand bravely against every assault of the devil. It is an impenetrable wall of defense against the enemy’s tactics. Faith is a shield to the believer. The shield of faith is so powerful that it makes you fortified, invulnerable, and armed to the teeth. It equips you to hold an ironclad position. It turns you into a spiritual tank so you have the ability to move your position forward without taking any losses yourself. Yes, the enemy will try to stop you. He will try but he will not succeed. The word “quench” in this verse is the Greek word “sebum” which means to quench by dousing or to extinguish by drowning in water. It refers to the water-soaked shield of Roman soldiers. You see, before Roman soldiers went out to battle, they purposely soaked their shields in water until they were completely water-saturated.The soldiers did this because they knew the enemy would be shooting fire-bearing arrows in their direction. In other words, it will be so heavily inundated with the water of God’s Word that even if a fiery dart pierces our shield, the huge amount of word in us will extinguish the flames and put our a potentially damaging situation! The words “fiery darts” are from the greek word “belos”. It referred to an arrow with its tip wrapped with fabric soaked in flammable fluids so it would burn with hot and angry flames. The famous Greek writer Thycidides used this Greek word “belos” to depict specially made, long slender arrows that outwardly looked harmless; however, the hollow interior of the arrow was filled with flammable fluids that, upon impact exploded into a raging fire. This last arrow is most likely the picture that Paul had in the mind when he wrote about “…fiery darts of the wicked.” Often when the devil strikes, his attack looks inconsequential at first, like harmless little arrows that can do little damage. But when those arrows strike into the heart or emotions, they often explode and set human passions a flame, causing a minor issue to develop into a fierce, flaming situation. The damage done in such a moment is very serious and if it could have been avoided if the shield of faith had been held high and regularly doused in the water of the Word! There is no doubt that the devil will try to shoot his arrows in your direction. But having a shield of faith that is soaked (in the word makes all the difference). In the Word of God gives you double protection against these attacks. It guarantees that the enemy’s fiery darts will have little or not effect, even if they get close enough to strike your heart, mind or emotions in the midst of the situations you find yourself facing today. Take your time to soak in the word of God. Let the Word saturate and shield you so that when the enemy launches a surprise attack on you – your health, our finances, your marriage, your children, your family, your church, your business, or your job and career, – he will find that his fiery darts have no impact on your Word-soaked faith shield! Refuse to let yourself become the devil’s victim! Hold your Word-doused shield of faith high in front of you so it completely covers your life. Then rest assured that no fiery dart of the enemy will make any serious impact on you. That faith shield will protect you from anything the enemy throws you through the dynamic; explosive power of God! How do you soak your shield? Look at these scriptures: Joshua 1: 8; Proverbs 4: 20-27; Romans 4: 16-18; Romans 10: 8-11; Matthew 12: 35-37; Proverbs 18: 21; Sing God’s Word and the truth of His Word and apply it to me personally. I speak and sing in the first person. When I have pain or symptoms in my body, it reminds me of God’s promise of healing. If I have a financial need, I don’t look to my checkbook. I look into the word and begin to speak out loud those promises that cover my situation. When I am faced with a situation that I have no clue about how to remedy. I ask and receive God’s wisdom according to James chapter 1. He who lacks wisdom….. If I am not sure about the promise. If I am not sure I believe the promise, I meditate on that scripture, praying in tongues, asking Holy Spirit for revelation and I go on that path until I know in my knower! The scripture rolls around in my mind until it drops into my heart and then there is no doubt. When you are not quite sure-that is a sign that you need to meditate, pray and continue to labor (Hebrews 4: 11) to enter into rest concerning that promise.   https://books.google.com/books?id=B_xmvYiVgYoC&pg=PA67&lpg=PA67&dq=roman+shield+doused&source=bl&ots=QLMHLqjnC9&sig=ACfU3U1pCZubAhtS6VelR0ZXSRh0n7Dt9A&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjGh6qprbHoAhVFF6wKHeyXANwQ6AEwGHoECAgQAQ#v=onepage&q=roman%20shield%20doused&f=false

  10. Sometimes it is hard to keep the shield of faith up. All I know to do with that is say keep praying, keep believing, keep rejoicing. I have been rather down lately. Different things have been weighing heavily on me lately. . I can be very hard on myself. Not being able to teach, looking at my life refectively and seeing unaccomplished goals However Tuesday, something happened That helped me to start looking at the good things. The blessings I do have. You see, Kim texted me and let me know that the Bible study has helped her and she used parts of it to teach her family. That one simple act, helped encourage me and helped me to focus on the things that were good. It’s a struggle, this life is not easy.l Life simply doesn’t always go our way, but guess what, we have a Savior who has walked our walk and he knows exactly what fiery darts are.
