The Last of the Mohicans is a classic movie depicting the battle between the French and
British troops to control colonial America. It tells of a story involving a tribe called the Mohicans
which is caught between the battling troops. Three tribesmen from the Mohican tribe
prominently feature in the movie and it is their attitude to defend their tribe that the title of the
movie is derived from. The movie is set in the year 1757 when the actual battle is believed to
have take place. The movie majorly depicts the theme of love and intimacy in times of war. The
current paper aims at summarizing the movie and giving some insight into specific scenes from
the movie.
Chingachgook, his son Uncas and adopted white son Hawkeye visit the home of the
Camerons where Jack Winthrop tells Hawkeye that he is recruiting volunteers from the
Mohicans to fight in the battle alongside the British soldiers. Upon this information, the group
sets up for a journey to Albany in New York to get the terms to the agreement to fight against the
Hurons who have shown allegiance to the French. Meanwhile, a group consisting of Cora
Munroe, her sister Alice and a British garrison are on their way to check on their father after they
had earlier on received information to meet him. Duncan Howard commands the garrison and he

is depicted to be betrothed to Cora. Magua, a native of the region acts the guide of the group and
is often seen dissenting the actions of the British troops in his naïve language.
The Hurons ambush the group, kicking the women off their horse. The British soldiers
are subdued by the Hurons but Chingachgook, Uncas and Hawkeye suddenly arrive and help
fight off the Hurons and forcing them withdraw their ambush. However, after the ambush all
except the women are dead and Hawkeye, after searching for supplies from the belongings of the
dead British soldiers, assures the group of their safety and decides that they continue their
journey on foot.
While it appears extremely inhuman for the group not to bury the dead, Hawkeye
explains that their failure to bury the Camerons was aimed at covering their tracks. At this,
Chingachgook explains how he was captured by the Mohicans at a young age upon the killing of
his parents by the Mohican militiamen. He also tells them a folktale which describes the creation
of the stars which describes the existence of a monument close to the Cameron’s and his family.
Upon discovering that Cora is understands all his explanation, he agrees to keep watch for that
night so as they could continue their trek the following day. Meanwhile, an Huron hunting party
passes close to their spot forcing the group to decide to move out of the current spot and ready
themselves for combat. The group continues the journey aftr that night with Huron party on their
trail. Unfortunately, as they arrive at their destination, the find that the French troops are
bombarding the place and it is therefore it is unsafe for them.
The group finds a way and sneaks into the fort and the girls are happily received by their
father. However, the girls’ father is surprised by their coming to him as he had not sent for them
to come. It is at this instance that it becomes clear that they had been tricked by Magua. Actually,

Magua had planned to lie to them so that they could be killed by the Hurons on their way. The
father of the girls, with the power on his disposal offers Chingachgook and his group al that they
needed as a show of gratitude for saving his daughters. Munroe then explains that the group
lacks enough time to prepare a combat against the French as they had been denied reinforcement
and that the French troops were digging trenches in readiness for the launch of destructive
missiles to the fort. Munroe decides to request for more reinforcement at least for one last time
from General Webb who is based at Fort Edward.
Magua who is clearly betraying the group consisting of the the british soldiers and
colonialist returns to the French camp just outside the fort where he reveals all the plans of the
british side to the frencch troops. General Montcalm, who leads the French battalion asks
Munroe why he is ken on killing the family of Munroe and Magua answers back that he hates the
man with passion. He states that he will kill the girls and show Munroe that his bloodline had
been cut and the rip off his heart. Magua’s hatred spans from an event from the past where
Munroe commanded an attack in Magua’s home area where his parents were killed. After the
raid, Magua was taken as a slave and after returning he found that his wife had remarried
thinking that he might have been killed.
Meanwhile, Cora and Hawkeye fall in love. At this instance, although Duncan tries to
assure her that al will be well when they return back home in England, Cora dismisses him
accusing him of insincerity and immorality. She tells him to the face that although he is held as a
man with qualities to be admired, she takes none of them as highly. The movie later shows
Hawkeye and Cora enjoying themselves intimately. There is delay in the sending of
reinforcement and soon the French outrun the Britons in the fort and they are forced to surrender

to Mantecalm’s troops. As the Britons head out of the fort, they are attacked by the Hurons led
by Magua. Magua kills Munroe and tells him that his daughters were next to being killed.
