The Colmore Schools
Governing Body Update 2015
Every school is required by law to have a governing body. Like all others, the aim of the
Colmore Schools’ Governing Body is to support and challenge the executive headteachers
and school staff to ensure continuous improvement in learning for all pupils. The governing
body doesn’t get involved in the day-to-day running of the schools but focuses on the
schools’ priorities and goals. The governing body at Colmore includes the executive
headteachers, school staff, representatives elected by parents and carers of pupils, and co-
opted governors (who may also be parents and carers of children at the school).
Being a governor is a voluntary, unpaid role. All governors meet together every half term,
and we also meet in smaller sub-committees which report back to the full governing body.
These committees focus on specific areas of school life which reflect the responsibilities of a
governing body: Teaching & Learning, Finance & Premises, Staffing & Welfare, and Strategic
Planning.
If you would like to find out more about the Colmore Schools’ Governing Body or about
becoming a governor, please email governors@colmorej.co.uk.
You can also find general information about school governors at
https://www.sgoss.org.uk/volunteers/volunteer-role.html
Current Governors at the Colmore Schools are:
Lorne Pearcey: Chair (co-opted governor & parent)
Siobhan Jones: Vice Chair, Safeguarding Governor (co-opted governor & parent)
Gareth Iley: Vice Chair (elected parent governor)
Gill Hughes: (elected parent governor)
James Marsh: (co-opted governor & parent)
Paul Mason: (co-opted governor & parent)
Hamayoon Sultan: (co-opted governor)
Fiona Collard: (Local Authority governor)
Viv Randall: Executive Headteacher
Cheryl Millard: Executive Headteacher
Giles Hughes: (staff governor)
Carol Fox : (staff governor)
Simon Smith: (non-teaching staff governor)
Ruth Whiston: (non-teaching staff governor)
The Bigger Picture
We know that Ofsted has repeatedly found the Colmore Schools to be Outstanding and the
schools and staff have fantastic national reputations. We support the schools as they make
the most of new opportunities and developments in education, but ensure that we don’t
change simply for change’s sake.
Over the last couple of years the Governing Body have been part of a number of important
changes and developments in the schools. These have included: becoming Teaching
Schools; federating the Governing Body of Colmore Junior and Infant Schools; encouraging
and supporting closer working between the two schools; evaluating options for the future
structure of the schools in the best interest of the pupils; appointing a new executive
headteacher; exploring best use of the schools’ buildings to meet the needs of all pupils.
Parent and Carer Survey Feedback
Earlier this year we invited parents and carers to
feedback on their experience of the Colmore
Schools. 443 completed surveys were returned.
Thank you; we really do appreciate you taking
the time to do this. We look at all the responses
and comments and use them with other data
and information when looking at the schools’
priorities.
Of the 14 questions we asked, there were only 4
where more than 1% of you disagreed with the
statement provided. Although this shows that
most people are happy with their children’s
experiences at Colmore, we use this to question
how the Colmore Schools can continue to
improve.
We find the comments you provided particularly helpful and use these throughout the year in
the relevant committees. Some comments refer to areas we are already looking at e.g.
school dinners, parking, the schools’ websites. This tells us that these concern you too, but
also that we should let you know what we are doing about them. Some things are out of our
control, e.g. the schools being used as a polling station. Some topics get a mixed response.
For example, there are as many comments about too much or too difficult homework as there
are comments about too little or too easy homework. It is our job to question whether all
children are receiving homework at the appropriate level and amount for them.
Your comments also remind us that, while we continue to question how staff can improve the
Colmore Schools, we should also thank staff for the excellent job they are doing. A very small
sample of your kind words are below.
