Helpful Resume Building Tips
So you are thinking about redoing your resume? Chances are if this is true, you are
either out of work or thinking about changing careers. Your resume is the face of
your experience and background when you are not there. Things like appearance,
spelling and grammar all matter being that this is a direct representation of who you
are and the work you produce when you are not sitting in the same room as your
future prospective employer. Here are some of the top tips that we have found to be vital in your
future:

   1. Choose an easy to read format. Unless you are applying for an uber-technical job, chances
are you do not need a technical resume. There are a plethora of different resumes types,
choose one that is easy to read and has all of the categories that are relevant to your
        background.
   2. Spelling and Grammar. This must be impeccable. Having errors in your spelling or grammar
can send a message to your future employer that is not so good. Our online resume builder
can aid you in this process.
   3. Capitalize on your strengths. If there is part of your resume that is better than another, for
instance if you have much more education than you do experience, put that on top of the
        other one.
   4. Bold the highlights. Most employers will simply scan the resume for the highlights, make
them easier to read, and control this by bolding them.
   5. Always use references appropriately. Your references are the person or persons that can
vouch for your integrity as well as your work experience. Here are the best types of people
        to use as references:
            o Former employers
            o Former co-workers
            o Owners of companies
o Influential members of the community: politicians, clergy, etc.
o Stay away from: random friends, never use family even if you worked with them, and
unrelated people. Also never fabricate a person or lie. Even if you do not get caught,
frequently employers will contact a person on your resume a year later and you
                might get fired after this.
   6. Always print your resume on high quality paper, use a matte linen style paper with a slight
hue of tan or bone. Stay away from too many colors, designs, etc. Unless this involves the
use of your face, stay away from using a headshot.

Another great tip is to have someone who is a manager or owner of a company proof read your
resume before sending it out. Ask them for their honest opinion of your resume and accept their
feedback willingly. Our free resume builder can help with this.

If you take these tips and pay attention to the small details, chances are before you know it you will
find yourself working at the job of your dreams. Good luck in your search!
