Opportunity
IceBreaker:
What was the best opportunity you ever took advantage of?
Looking back, what was a missed opportunity?
Do you agree with the statement, “opportunity seldom knocks twice.” What does
that even mean?
What are some drawbacks from taking advantage of an opportunity?
Dig: Read Colossians 4:2-6
In these verses, Paul offers instructions on how we should relate to God, to other
Christians, and to ‘outsiders’. Verses 2-4 point to our interactions with God; verses 5-6
point to our interaction with “outsiders.”
Interactions with God:
A. Prayer: Is it coincidence that this is listed first? Why is
prayer important?
B. Watchfulness: What are we to ‘watch’ for? Why is this important?
C. Thankfulness: Why is thankfulness such a key ingredient in a
Christian’s life?
Interactions with other Christians:
A. In v3-4, while he is in chains, Paul gives specific prayer requests for God’s help.
What did he want prayer for?
What does this teach us about prayer in evangelism? See Eph 6:19-20; 2 Thess 3:1
What are some barriers or closed doors we can pray to be open today?
2. Interactions with ‘Outsiders’:
A. Wise actions How do wise actions help us proclaim the gospel?
B. Opportunity Am I alert to opportunities to share the gospel?
C. Graceful talk How do gracious words open doors to share the
gospel?
D. Salty talk How would you define ‘salty’ in this context?.
E. Knowing how to answer How can you be prepared to best answer each
individual?
5. Reflection and Prayer - Reflect on how to apply the Word. Pray for an attitude of
gratitude and grace in all circumstances, and for the needs of others as you close the
session.
