About Safmech: Stuart Agricultural and Forestry
Mechanisation
8. Safmech began its existence through a series of discussions between two completely unrelated
parties with a passion for very similar ideas. Gerald Stuart Broadbent and Stuart Peter Sprunt
were first introduced during a demonstration day for Mondi while assisting with two different
facets of modernised planting concepts. Safmech would like to extend a big thank you to Dean
Dacosta for introducing us both to each other and to the possibility of a business partnership.
Stuart Sprunt comes from a long history of agricultural equipment design and manufacturing
starting back in 1999 were he began manufacturing components for the G.C Tillage product
range within the family engineering business. This progressed and developed into a business
which became a major contract manufacturer to a number of agricultural product manufacturers
such as CUTS manufacturing and Landmech engineering. Due to a number of negative economic
influences the family business was forced to close its doors in 2009 which is when Stuart joined
Rogue Service Centre in Pietermaritzburg and developed the Rogue Agricultural product range
and brand. Sprunt says that his time at Rogue was better spent than at any tertiary education
available as he was allowed the freedom to follow his passion which resulted in a very popular
and sought after product range. In 2013 Sprunt says that he began to feel the restrictions of being
an employee as opposed to being an employer. This was the deciding factor for him to make a
change and develop another range of equipment suited for both forestry and agricultural
requirements.
Gerald Broadbent comes from an extensive forestry and timber harvesting background. In recent
years he has accumulated a small earthworks fleet of equipment and built up an impressive light
fabrication and project management business trading as GSB projects. GSB projects specialises
in timber nursery modernising projects which extends from design to manufacturing and
installation of complete tray cart systems, sand bed structures, platforms and many other
engineering and earth works facets required by the industry. Gerald also has an experienced
background in fabrication and manufacturing of equipment such as timber grabs and winches.
The combination of these two individuals has created an exciting robust range of both forestry
and agricultural equipment. The business is situated in the heart of the midlands just off the N3
highway in Merrivale. The factory already boasts an impressive array of modern equipment and
manufactures almost every component of the product range in house. This allows them to be
competitive and maintain a high standard of quality. The product range has grown in leaps and
bounds and has been very well accepted in the market place. Sprunt says “The customer support
has also been absolutely fantastic and very much appreciated.” “We at Safmech would like to
take this opportunity to thank both all our clients as well as our team of staff for their loyal and
continued support and the passion which they share in the products.”
