The quality of your life is directly proportionate to the quality of
your habits… a truism as old as Aristotle.
But, here comes the funny part: creating good, healthy habits (such
as single-tasking and brushing your teeth regularly) often takes
time, hard work, dedication and a boat load of willpower… all of
which you have a limited amount to spare.

To make matters worse, creating “bad” habits (such as
multitasking) is so much easier. You just do certain things over
and over again and boom, one day the behavior becomes
automatic.
But, let’s not throw in the towel just yet.
Over the years, I’ve devised a super-simple habit formation
process of just 3 steps that has helped me turn a lot aspects of
my life around.
I call it the “Habit Formation Trifecta”.
Here’s how it works:
6. Mornings are magical.
The start of the day
comes with your
energy, willpower and
mood at their peaks…
the ideal breeding
ground for new habits.
Whatever you are
trying to do, do it as
close to the morning
as possible. Before you
get sucked into the
daily agenda, before
you exhaust all your
resources.
If you want to start
exercising regularly
for example,
1. Do It First Thing In
The Morning
doing it after work,
when you are tired and
unmotivated to do
anything else than
chill on the couch and
catch up on Netflix,
might prove
challenging. Stack the
deck in your favor. Set
yourself up for
success. Do it in the
morning.
Step 1, completed.

7. 2.EliminateFriction
DCharge your iPod. Find your keys.
Are you taking a water? Leave it
next to your clothes. Where are
you going to go? Left towards the
park or right towards the inner
streets? Plan out every little
detail, prepare for it and you are
halfway there. In the morning, you
just need to roll out of bed into
your gear, grab your stuff and off
you go.
By the time the voices in your
head start telling you “this is too
hard, what are you doing?”, they’ll
be drowned by the sound of your
sneakers hitting the pavement.
Visualize what you need to do,
prepare as much of it in advance
and too much friction will never
be a problem for you.
Friction is caused by every little
step you need to take in
preparation to get started with
your new habit.
Too much friction can stop you
dead in your tracks.
When you wake up at 6 AM with
every intention to go for a jog
(the new habit you are trying to
adopt), the seemingly-trivial
obstacle of not being able to
locate your keys can cause you
to give up and go back to bed.
The solution?
Prepare in advance.
ecide on what you are going to
wear, lay the clothes out in front
of your bed along with your
running shoes.

8. Some days you might do just the
minimum, others you’ll surpass it.
The idea here is to train the
behavior. Get used to that small
amount of action. Once it becomes
a routine, add more to it. Slowly
build your way up to your final
goal.
3.StartSmall,RidiculouslySmall
If you’ve never jogged for more
than 10 minutes in your life,
doing it for 30 every single day
means setting yourself up for
failure.
Figure out the smallest amount
of action you can take. Now, cut
it in half and start there.
Jog for 2 minutes. Floss one
tooth. Do 1 push-up. Write a
single paragraph.
Start small, exceedingly small.
