Tasting traditional food

4. First we conducted a survey of all the
families in our school, to find out their
favourite traditional meals.
Next we counted the results to find the 7
most popular dishes.

(A small double crust pie traditionally
filled with mutton and spices)

(A Scottish delicacy served with
mashed turnip and potatoes)

12. What is a haggis?
The myth
A haggis is a small three-legged animal
native to the Highland glens and
mountains. Haggis is only available in
season - 30th November (St. Andrews Day)
to 25th January (Robert Burns birthday).
The Haggis is a wild but shy creature
inhabiting upland Scotland The young
haggis is typified in form by being quite
small and squat whilst in advancing years
they tend to be fuller and longer in the
body. Myths about them only having three
legs (one uphill leg and two downhill) are
completely false - they like most legged
creatures have four legs, but their
downhill legs are longer.

13. Well, that’s what we like to tell the tourists…….
Haggis is a Scottish dish made of the heart, liver
and lungs of a sheep or lamb, combined with
oats, suet and other herbs and spices, and then
cooked in a casing traditionally made of the
animal's stomach. Thus, haggis is essentially a
form of sausage.
There are many stories in
Scotland about the haggis.

14. Farming in Scotland
As you can see our traditional meals
consist of meat, fish and root
vegetables.
In Scotland farmers breed cows, sheep
and pigs and so beef, lamb and pork
are popular foods.
Root vegetables such as onions,
carrots, neeps (turnip) and tatties (or
potatoes) are easy to grow in our
climate and have always been a part
of traditional meal times.
