2. Introduction to Web 2.0
Implementation of Web 2.0 tools are beneficial to
the classroom. Here are some reasons they are
valuable:
 creation of content is easy and quick.
 allows for students to be interactive with each
other and their teacher.
 provide opportunities for collaboration.
 teachers and students are able to participate in
knowledge communication.

4. Library and School Library 2.0
 Library 2.0 activities are like Web 2.0 activities,
but expand these activities to the library. They are
user-centered, have video, audio, and text
materials, gives many communication
opportunities, and is always innovating and
changing.
 Examples include: social networking, Twitter,
blogs, Wikis, podcasting, virtual conferencing,
course management systems, and virtual sites
with avatars.

5. Glossary of Terms
1. Web 2.0 – a World Wide Web application that is user generated and
allows a community of users to interact with the site and each other by
adding or updating the content.
2. Interactivity – allowing two-way transfer of information between a user
and the central point of a communication system
3. Social Networking – using a Web site to communicate informally with
other members in the site by posting photos, messages, etc.
4. taxonomies – the classification of something, usually science related
5. folksnomies – the activity of sorting information into categories derived
from the consensus of the information users
6. Twitter – a free messaging system that allows people to send and
receive short messages called tweets
7. Blogs – also called web logs, are online logs whose posts are arranged
in reverse chronological order
8. Wikis – a set of powerful Web tools that allow two or more people to
collaborate together to create something in a virtual environment.
9. Podcasting – a digital recording available for download from the Internet
10. Avatars – a virtual version of yourself

6. Response to Chapter Questions
1. Construct both a blog and a wiki. You will need
to research how to do each, and then post
meaningful content. Maintain each for one
month (longer, if you prefer), and then report
back to the class with your results.
I have a blog and a wiki that I have kept up
since January. I had no idea how to do a wiki or
a blog, but it was easy to sign up and begin. I
also like how easy it is to edit or to add new.

7. Summary
Web 2.0 tools can offer a wide range of opportunities for
learning in the library. Web 2.0 applications motivate
students, help them gain more knowledge on their
subject, and help their communication skills with their
teacher and their peers.
