3. Unfortunately, Xylitol is a poison to dogs. Xylitol can cause life threatening (or even fatal) hypoglycemia in dogs. Xylitol can also cause liver failure in dogs. Xylitol & Dogs
4. Wrong. A couple pieces of gum may be all it takes to KILL a small dog or sicken a larger one. In studies, dogs that have ingested greater than 100mg of Xylitol per kg of body weight experienced serious negative effects. Unfortunately, chewing gum companies don’t make Xylitol levels public knowledge. A Little Won’t Hurt, Right?
5. Keep gum away from all dogs. Keep purses and coat pockets away from dogs – they can often smell gum and dig into the source. Be especially careful about sugar-free foods and candies. If you don’t know exactly what is in something, don’t feed it to your dog. Contact gum and food companies and urge them to put canine warnings on their packages. You could save lives.
