Analyzing the performance and behavior of applications run on Kubernetes is often challenging, making the need to optimize prior to production something that you must have. However, a problem has reared its head in the form of a question: How do you get an accurate measurement of application performance or other behavior without accurate testing or an accurate representation of how it will run in production? In this webinar, we will present and discuss a new fully Open Source tool for creating the needed tests with which to accurately measure your applications. We hope you will join us to learn more about this tool, and find out how you can help contribute.
This webinar is sponsored by StormForge and hosted by The Linux Foundation.

Actually using metrics for making meaninful decisions
Several development teams have metrics and analysis tools available that can be used to support important decisions, but very few of them actually use this information. This talk will introduce software analytics, a technique that can be used to use this information to make decisions and take action. It will also present a Lean Software Analytics Canvas, a simple tool that can be used by small and medium agile teams to incorporate software analytics in their development process. Realistic examples and results based on the experience of applying the canvas in real teams will be also presented.
THE (IR)RATIONAL INCIDENT RESPONSE: HOW PSYCHOLOGICAL BIASES AFFECT INCIDENT ...DevOpsDays Tel Aviv
Have you ever felt you took every wrong turn possible in the process of mitigating a production incident? Did you go through a 3-hour hell during incident response and felt the incident wasn’t complex enough to justify the horrors you’ve experienced? Did it cause you to question your engineering or problem-solving skills?
Well, it’s only partially you. Our brain is wired to make decision-making simpler. In doing so, it exposes itself to biases, heuristics, and other quirks that may seem like “bad decisions” in hindsight.
In this talk, through real-life outages, we’ll project those psychological principles onto the world of production monitor, and incident management. As a responder, you’ll learn why those behavioral patterns emerge during production incidents and what can be done to limit their effect, and as a manager, you’ll learn how to enable and encourage a healthy environment to better support those patterns.
2017 Microservices Practitioner Virtual Summit: Ancestry's Journey towards Mi...Ambassador Labs
Adopting new development approaches such as containerization is a big change for traditional enterprise environments. Ancestry, the global leader in family history and consumer genomics, has been a big data company long before the term existed with billions of historical records and millions of family trees, much of which ran in a traditional IT environment. With a new flood of genomic data from its AncestryDNA test and the desire to continue to increase the speed of innovation, Ancestry adopted containerization and micro services using Kubernetes orchestration APIs. This session will describe Ancestry's journey to containerization and how a coherent and consistent API set such as Kubernetes can aid companies looking to make a similar transition. Paul MacKay, one of Ancestry’s Software Architects, will discuss what the company has learned during the past few years of development from both a technical and cultural change perspective.

Continuous Delivery Conference 2014 - Bas DijkstraBas Dijkstra
A large telecommunications service provider in the Netherlands suffered from long test cycles and, as a result, from long delivery times for their core order management application due to limited access to external dependencies in the test environment. By introducing service virtualization they have been able to remove these access restrictions and successfully take their first steps towards Continuous Delivery.
As more companies have adopted microservices, conventional wisdom on microservices architecture and best practices have started to converge. Based on Datawire's experience with dozens of companies, we’ll discuss the evolution of these key trends, including polyglot architectures, the service mesh, and the role of operations.

Abstract: Microservices distribute the complexity of applications into smaller processes and infrastructure. In conclusion policies for encyrption, cost labelling or access control become decentralized too. The already complex components of a cloud-native application, such as container orchestration, IaaS components and CI/CD pipelines, complicate the technically uniform definition of these guidelines further.
OPA (Open Policy Agent) is a CNCF tool to define and check policies. What makes opa special is the easy integration into cloud-native environments in combination with rego, a universal logical programming language which allows defining policies across technology boundaries. This technical presentation is an introduction into OPA and demonstrates typical use-cases.

How to Streamline Incident Response with InfluxDB, PagerDuty and RundeckInfluxData
Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR) is a foundational KPI for most organizations. DevOps and SRE teams are under intense pressure to reduce MTTR when resolving incidents. Often parts of incident response processes are manual, bringing together alerts, runbooks, ad-hoc scripts, and people to form a response.
In this webinar, we will show you how to improve resolution time by configuring InfluxDB notification endpoints to PagerDuty and triggering auto-remediations with Rundeck. Using Rundeck’s automated runbooks, customers have experienced up to 50% reduction in incident response time, greatly improving team productivity and reducing unnecessary outage time.

Ensuring Performance in a Fast-Paced Environment (CMG 2014)Martin Spier
Netflix accounts for more than a third of all traffic heading into American homes at peak hours. Making sure users are getting the best possible experience at all times is no simple feat and performance is at the core of this experience. In order to ensure performance and maintain development agility in a highly decentralized environment/(organization?), Netflix employs a multitude of strategies, such as production canary analysis, fully automated performance tests, simple zero-downtime deployments and rollbacks, auto-scaling clusters and a fault-tolerant stateless service architecture. We will present a set of use cases that demonstrate how and why different groups employ different strategies to achieve a common goal, great performance and stability, and detail how these strategies are incorporated into development, test and DevOps with minimal overhead.

Monitoring Big Data Systems Done "The Simple Way" - Codemotion Berlin 2017Demi Ben-Ari
Once you start working with distributed Big Data systems, you start discovering a whole bunch of problems you won’t find in monolithic systems.
All of a sudden to monitor all of the components becomes a big data problem itself.
In the talk we’ll mention all of the aspects that you should take in consideration when monitoring a distributed system once you’re using tools like:
Web Services, Apache Spark, Cassandra, MongoDB, Amazon Web Services.
Not only the tools, what should you monitor about the actual data that flows in the system?
And we’ll cover the simplest solution with your day to day open source tools, the surprising thing, that it comes not from an Ops Guy.
Cloud Native CI/CD with Spring Cloud PipelinesLars Rosenquist

[DPE Summit] How Improving the Testing Experience Goes Beyond Quality: A Deve...Roberto Pérez Alcolea
It is well known that organizations connect software testing with software quality: making sure that the code does what it supposed to do.
Unfortunately, many organizations believe that testing is a slow process that causes stagnancy in the project. Organizations say that due to slow testing process they are not able to meet set milestones, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
The testing stage is also part of the developer experience, and making it such that engineers are productive and continue delivering software not only fast but with confidence is crucial.
In this talk, we will explore a few approaches that we are taking in order to deliver a more consistent and delightful testing experience for JVM engineers at Netflix. The end goal: speed up engineers’ feedback loop by running tests locally constantly as much as possible.
Thinking DevOps in the era of the Cloud - Demi Ben-AriDemi Ben-Ari
The lines between Development and Operations people have gotten blurry and lots of skills needs to be held by both sides.
In the talk we'll talk about all of the considerations that are needed to be taken when creating a development and production environment, mentioning Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment and the Buzzword "DevOps", also talking about some real implementations in the industry.
Of course how can we leave out the real enabler of the whole deal,

Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Testing and K8s App Optimization
○ Apply Machine Learning
○ Cloud Native
○ Open Source
4. Optimization / Desired Behavior
● Optimization is getting your application to behave how you want it
○ Could be Cost, Performance, Resiliency, # of Sandwiches, whatever
● How do you measure “Desired Behavior”?
○ The first step of measurement is knowing your tool
○ Even harder in a world of Kubernetes and Distributed Systems
● We have to stimulate behavior
○ Without a load you cannot see what the behavior response is
5. Current Load Testing
Either you don’t know at all:
● Hitting a particular testing endpoint
● Hitting just the application root
● How many 200’s per second?
● Ratio of connections to errors
● Grasping at straws
Or you’re making some quality guesses:
● Measuring the traffic
● Analyzing the flow and patterns
● Recreating those patterns
● Putting a lot of work in
● Requires engineering time and effort
Inaccurate/Irrelevant Load Tests Handcrafted Artisanal Load Tests
8. Testing in Prod
● Testing outside of prod doesn’t reflect reality, but why not?
● Is it differences in infrastructure?
○ That’s easily solved
● Is it differences in operational care and feeding?
○ Should be no difference, but still easily solved
● Mostly, it’s differences in usage.
○ “Virtual Reality is an Oxymoron”
