4. Vocational Nursing Partnership Why? Because we needed to expand our students’ nursing opportunities Steps: Called and set up a visit with SPC to talk about a possible vocational nursing partnership Looked at a some high school models within the state

Vocational Nursing Partnership Steps: Decided on utilizing a different model than what was being done across the state to have better student success Developed a Memorandum of Understanding between FHS and SPC Applied for the TEA AchieveTexas Grant to get this program ready for the next school year

7. Vocational Nursing Partnership FHS Campus Requirements: Must pass all TAKS Exit Level tests as a junior Must be a Certified Nurse Aide Must take Government & Economics during your junior year Must take English IV during summer before senior year

9. Vocational Nursing Partnership SPC Requirements: Take and pass all 5 sections of Accuplacer Complete application to program andSPC Complete physical, including immunizations Complete CPR Pass Criminal Background Check Pass Drug Screen

10. Vocational Nursing Partnership Required to come to 3-day orientation in July called “Camp DNR” (Do Nursing school Right) Family Night for parents to discuss the differences between high school and college (FERPA)

11. Vocational Nursing Partnership Concerns: How to bring 17-year-olds into the world of nursing What type of “fit” will there be with non-traditional students (largest population in vocational nursing) with these students

12. Vocational Nursing Partnership What did we ask of the students? Give up being a high school student No time for football games or pep rallies No time for extracurricular activities No field trips No traditional “senior” events Limited time for friends and family

13. Vocational Nursing Partnership The trade-off: a career within 3 months of high school graduation A launching pad into other health care fields while being able to support oneself Opportunity to see if nursing is the correct career path Opportunity to grow up

Vocational Nursing Program First semester: A&P, nutrition, VN concepts, skills, med administration, mental health/illness, clinical (17 hours) Second semester: Gerontology, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing I, maternal-neonatal nursing, clinical (17hours) Third semester: Pediatrics, professional development, medical-surgical nursing II, IV therapy, clinical (16 hours)

15. Vocational Nursing Program Students graduate from high school in May Will graduate from vocational nursing program in August

Future for graduates Eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) for licensure in Texas Graduate Vocational Nurses in West Texas area start between $32-$46,000 year for an “in demand” field Jobs: hospital, home health, rural school nursing, physician offices, long-term care, criminal justice nursing, insurance nursing, medical sales
