The document introduces the Cross-Border Citizen Scientists project, which aimed to provide science education to young people on both sides of the Finnish-Russian border. The project involved 12 students from Finland and Russia who studied the border area through four themes: environment, history, business, and mental borders. For each theme, students attended lectures, participated in in-depth study periods with specialists, held joint seminars to present findings, and taught other students what they learned. The goal was for the young "citizen scientists" to gain first-hand knowledge of the opportunities and challenges of the border area through conducting their own small research projects. The manual provides details on implementing a similar cross-border youth education project in other border regions.

Presentation at the First International Conference of University Community Engagement "Redefining Community Engagement" November 25-28 2014, M-Regency Hotel, Makassar, Indonesia
The social science club aims to make students responsible and useful members of society. It focuses on patriotism, discipline, and culture through activities like exhibitions, project reports, display boards, educational tours, and presentations. The club provides opportunities for self-realization, generates interest in social science, utilizes leisure time, and inspires independent work. It creates intellectual curiosity, practical knowledge, thinking skills, and democratic values among students. There are general clubs that cover broad topics and special clubs that focus on specific areas like history, geography, economics, and politics.
The document describes the Finnish model of collaboration between social work agencies and universities in social work education. Key points:
1) In the 1980s-90s, the City of Helsinki and University of Helsinki recognized mutual needs - the city needed knowledge and innovation for social issues, and the university needed structures linking research, teaching and practice.
2) This led to the 2000 founding of the Heikki Waris Institute, a joint agency-university organization providing fieldwork placements and continuing education for social workers.
3) The model features collaborative learning networks between universities, agencies, practitioners, citizens and students. Practice research is integrated into master's programs to develop "research-minded" social workers.

The Pictures of Ageing project was a pilot study exploring demography, healthy aging, and self-perception among older people in Uganda. Led by universities in Uganda and the UK, the project partnered experts from various disciplines including art, medical research, and social sciences. They collected demographic data and held focus groups to understand reflections of older people's lives. The self-perception team identified challenges like health, economics, and communication issues. Exhibitions of participants' art helped express their feelings and promote interdisciplinary research. The project improved skills and changed attitudes about art's role, and its model could be expanded to study healthy aging elsewhere.
This document outlines the Snapshots of Remote Communities project, a photography and storytelling initiative that documents students' local communities. It discusses the project's history and partnerships between schools, regional museums and the National Museum of Australia. Teachers from participating Western Australian schools introduce themselves and share how they plan to implement Snapshots in their classrooms to explore community histories through student photography and exhibitions.
The document summarizes the June 14, 2017 Upstate SC STEM Collaborative meeting. It discusses updates on various STEM initiatives in the region like iMAGINE, Science on the Move, and the STEM Tech Team. It also provides an overview of the National Society of Black Engineers chapter activities and upcoming events. Plans for expanding several of the STEM programs in 2018 are outlined. The document concludes with announcing the next collaborative meeting date to be determined.
The 2010 edition of the Communicator magazine from MSU's College of Communication Arts & Sciences features research that is changing lives. Alumni Board President Ed Cohen updates that the board is working to engage alumni and establish an endowment to support the college.
Access Sport provides three core programmes to unlock the power of community sports clubs: Ignite disability inclusion, the BMX Legacy Programme, and Better Futures social inclusion. The BMX Legacy Programme builds new BMX tracks and clubs to encourage youth cycling participation. It has expanded to 14 London boroughs, engaged over 14,000 participants including 30% females and 58% from black and minority ethnic groups. The programme addresses declining youth cycling rates and aims to make cycling accessible for disadvantaged and underrepresented groups. It takes a holistic, place-based approach through community outreach, facilities, competitions and skills development. Partnerships are key to its success, especially at the local level. Sustainability is prioritized from the start

Volleyball, born in 1895 through the inventive mind of William G. Morgan, originated as "Mintonette" within YMCA circles in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. Quickly evolving from its humble beginnings, it underwent a significant name change to "volleyball" as Alfred Halstead aptly captured its essence during an early exhibition. With standardized rules established, the sport spread rapidly, finding fertile ground within YMCA organizations and beyond. The formation of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) in 1947 marked a pivotal moment, ushering in a new era of international recognition and growth. Volleyball made its Olympic debut in 1964, captivating audiences worldwide with its fast-paced action and competitive spirit. Over the years, beach volleyball emerged as a popular variant, further diversifying the sport's appeal. Today, volleyball stands as a global phenomenon, celebrated for its athleticism, teamwork, and universal accessibility, embodying the enduring spirit of camaraderie and competition.

Research focus
• We’re researching young practitioners of alternative or life-
style sports in Finland
• Selection of 10 different sports: capoeira, bouldering,
parkour, street dance, skateboarding, longboarding, roller
derby, freestyle scootering, contemporary circus, and inline
skating
• Focus on the changing spatial and social ‘landscapes’ of
youth sports culture

3. Mikkelin ammattikorkeakoulu / Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences / www.mamk.fi
Wheaton’s (2013) descriptions of
life-style sports
• Recent, post-1960s
• Consumption of new objects and technologies
• Investment in resources, style and identity
• Thrill, buzz, being at one with the environment
• Creativity, expression, presenting self to others
• Opposition (or ambivalence) to regulation or traditional
competition
• Middle-class, white and Western, not affiliated to national
attachments
• Activities are predominantly individualistic in form or attitude
• New or re-appropriated spaces with loose boundaries
4. Mikkelin ammattikorkeakoulu / Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences / www.mamk.fi
Background and focus
• Wheaton (2013): Predominantly individualistic in form or
attitude(?)
• Maffesoli (1996), Lähteenmaa (2002): light memberships
• “Why do adolescents give up sport?” (Tiirikainen & Konu
2013): Importance of social relations
How do social relations affect alternative sports practise, its
motivation, organisation and social meanings?
Are the sports individualistic?
5. Mikkelin ammattikorkeakoulu / Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences / www.mamk.fi
Research material
• Online survey targeting young people practising alternative
sports, n = 935 (end of 2012)
– Focus on the intensity of sport practise, the practitioners’
background, social differences, attitudes
• Participant observation and theme interviews on the field
(ongoing, from 2012 on)
12. Mikkelin ammattikorkeakoulu / Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences / www.mamk.fi
Friends and strangers in spaces
• The sports are practised in groups, including both close
friends and less familiar practitioners
• The respondents express respect, solidarity and
identification with other practitioners of the same sport
• Sport sessions commonly involve hanging-out, often in
larger part than the actual sport activities
• So the sport both tie unfamiliar young people together
around a common interest, and provide a context and an
excuse for leisure in public space and urban environments
13. Mikkelin ammattikorkeakoulu / Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences / www.mamk.fi
”Everywhere in the world you can find street dancers
with the same passion and love, we’re all one big family”
(24-year-old street dancer)
”I start to chat with new faces in the park just because
they have inline skates on.”
(18-year-old inline skater)
”We get there in the afternoon and then skate there, eat
at some point, and skate more and talk shite. So the
place is also a social meeting spot. When the evening
darkens we go to the riverboats to drink soda.”
(24-year-old skateboarder)

Special relationships in the sport
practise
• Friendships: often created along the lines of age, gender
and skill level inside the sport group
• Peer learning: friendly relations provide opportunities for
learning by example and safe competition
• Motivation: sustained by active participation and close
relations between practitioners
• Acceptance: respect from older or skillful practitioners may
be important, and may be gathered by developing skills and
volunteering for the sport
15. Mikkelin ammattikorkeakoulu / Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences / www.mamk.fi
”You develop yourself, when you see, oh,
that one did that trick, I can’t do that one,
let’s do that now”
(22-year-old traceur)

Sport in the sphere of life
• Many informants say that the group and its social relations
are the most important thing in alternative sports practice
• Communities and mobility extend to other towns, to trips
and practitioners abroad, and to online spaces
• When the practitioners integrate into the sport community,
the sport starts to permeate all spheres of life
– …affects the way the practitioners see their environment
– …is more than a hobby
– …can be practised anywhere
17. Mikkelin ammattikorkeakoulu / Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences / www.mamk.fi
”I’m open and helpful towards others. I
want to become a good derby player,
so I plan my life accordingly (diet and
other excercise, healthy life-style).”

I: Can anyone skate? What do you think?
S: Of course, why couldn’t they?
I: There’s no limitations?
S: No. Well, not really. I’ve seen those videos,
where someone with no legs skates, it doesn’t
prohibit him/her at all. Can’t think of other
reasons, either. Except maybe, if there’s no
people, no mates who skate. It could be a
problem. If your friends stop skating, you would
have to skate alone, not everyone wants that.

Conclusions
• Alternative sports may be individualistic athletically, but:
• Friends and peers are the key reason for young people to
begin practicing these lifestyle sports
• The sports are practised in groups and communities formed
around common interests
• The sports both bring strangers together and provide a
backdrop for hanging-out in public space
• Relations in the sport groups affects organisation,
motivation and hierarchies
• Deepening social relations are also a key factor in the
transformation of a sport into a lifestyle sport

Editor's Notes
Friends and seeing the sport live are the most influential factors
Media exposure is somewhat important too
Other sports, hobbies and schools have little to do with taking up alternative sports
Different sports use different kinds of spaces – but have much overlap in the use of public space
The sports use both conventional and repurposed spaces
Use of repurposed public space focuses on walkways/parking lots and yards/parks
In almost all researched sports, visibility is regarded as an important or desirable thing
In some sports, some differences can be seen between female and male practitioners – but not in all
