GRADES AND CREDIT
The grading system was changed in 1971 to evaluate performance on the
basis of grades of Distinction (DIST) or Acceptable (AC). Distinction was
normally regarded as equivalent to A work and Acceptable was normally
awarded for work equivalent to a B or C in traditional grading systems. In
1986, the faculty approved the change to an A, B, C grading system,
allowing then enrolled students to choose between the two systems for
remaining academic work.
Credit is awarded on the basis of units per term, with 1/3 unit given for the
equivalent of one three-semester hour course. In a seven-week term a
student normally enrolls for one unit (equivalent to three courses) of
academic work requiring about 50 hours of class and preparation per
week.
The following formats for academic offerings and grades are included on
the WPI transcript:
1. Courses: 1/3 unit per course.
2. Independent study and projects: 1/6 unit minimum
for literature search or write-up, and normally a
minimum of 1/3 unit, extending up to a full unit, for
full-time work in a specific project during a term.
3. Physical Education: 1/12 unit per course.
Equivalent credit hours (semester hours) may be determined according to
the following conversion table:
1/3 unit = 3 credit hours
1/6 unit = 1.5 credit hours
1/9 unit = 1 credit hour
1/12 unit = .75 credit hour
Undergraduate Students are graded on the basis of the following
system:
A (or AD/DIST) Distinguished Work
B
> (or AC) Acceptable Work
C
SP Interim grade for qualifying projects
indicating satisfactory progress during the
respective term
I Incomplete
NAC the student did not perform satisfactorily on
the project or independent study
CR transfer credit
L Advanced Placement or course waived, no
substitution required
AT attended
S satisfactory
? or Q grade not on file
Unacceptable work in regular courses is not recorded.
TRANSFER CREDIT
Students may apply to transfer credit for courses taken at other
institutions. Transfer credit allowed is determined upon admissions to
WPI. A student taking courses at other schools subsequent to enrolling at
WPI must have advance approval from the respective department and a
review of performance to receive transfer credit.
ADVANCE PLACEMENT
If a student has been granted advance placement or credit, or both, the
appropriate statement appears on the transcript.
ACADEMIC HONORS
For all students graduating after May 1, 2011, graduation honors will
be determined as follows:
Graduation with High Distinction: An A in all four of the following: MQP,
IQP, Humanities and Arts Requirement, eight units of work registered at
WPI.
Graduation with Distinction: An A in all four of the following: MQP, IQP,
Humanities and Arts Requirement, four units of work registered at WPI
OR two of the three MQP, IQP, Inquiry/Seminar/Practicum, and six units
of work.
For all students who graduated from WPI after May 1986 through
April 2011, graduation honors are determined as follows:
Graduation with High Distinction: An A or AD/DIST grade on any four of
the following: MQP, IQP, Sufficiency/Seminar/Practicum, six units of WPI
course work or independent study. Competency Examination.
Graduation with Distinction: An A or AD/DIST on any three of the above.
For students graduating before May 1986, graduation honors are
determined as follows:
Graduation with High Distinction: For students who received a grade of
AD/DIST in both qualifying projects, Sufficiency, and Competency
Examination.
Graduation with Distinction: For students who received a grade of
AD/DIST in any three of the above.

ACCREDITATION
WPI is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and
Colleges. Accreditation indicates that the institution has been carefully
evaluated and found to meet standards agreed upon by qualified
educators. The aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical
engineering, civil engineering, electrical and computer engineering,
environmental engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing
engineering, and mechanical engineering programs are accredited by the
Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The
computer science program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation
Commission of ABET. A chemistry or biochemistry major who completes
a program satisfying the guidelines established by the American
Chemical Society is certified by that organization as having received an
undergraduate professional education in chemistry or biochemistry. The
undergraduate and graduate business offerings in the School of Business
are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business (AACSB).
RELEASE OF INFORMATION
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 prohibits the
release of this record to any other person or agency without the express
written consent of the student named on the transcript.
CALENDAR AND ACADEMIC LOAD
The undergraduate college calendar consists of four 7-week terms and an
optional summer term. Terms A and B are in the fall, C and D in the
spring, and E in the summer, with a normal academic load of one unit or
three courses/project equivalent per term. Graduate level activity runs on
a traditional 14-week semester.
DEGREE REQUIREMENENTS–UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
(an 80-word abstract of each project is located on the transcript)
Major Qualifying Project (MQP): The MQP consists of a minimum of
one unit of advanced level work, in the student’s major area of study. The
MQP is traditionally undertaken late in the third or fourth year and is
design – or research-oriented.
Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP): The IQP consists of a minimum of
one unit of work. The project subject matter focuses on the interaction
between technology and society in an area of interest to the student.
Sufficiency/Humanities and Arts Requirement: This requirement
usually consists of a five-course exploration of the humanities or in
engineering or science for students majoring in humanities. The
culmination is a 1/3 unit done in a seminar or practicum.
Distribution Requirements: In 1986, distribution requirements replaced
the Competency Examination. The Distribution Requirements specify that
the student must successfully complete minimum levels of course work
specified in general areas of study, such as math, basic sciences,
engineering science, and engineering design.
Social Sciences: Students must complete 2/3 unit course work in the
social sciences.
Physical Education: Students must complete 1/3 unit course work in
physical education.
Graduate Students are graded on the traditional 4.0 grading system of:
A, B, C, D, F
SP Interim grade for thesis/dissertation
indicating satisfactory progress during the
respective term
I Incomplete
DEF the work is continuing and a grade will be
assigned upon completion
AT attended (used to show participation in
college-sponsored programs)
