Park je svou rozlohou 9000 čtverečních kilometrů o něco větší něž Korsika. Klokotající rybníky, horké a prudké
sopečné exhalace, bublající bahnité jámy a horké prameny, na nichž se vytvářejí nádherně barevné usazeniny,
svědčící o tom, že park je geologicky aktivním územím.
Krajina s rozsáhlými jehličnatými lesy a loukami kolem Yellonstonského jezera, s mohutnými třítisícovými horskými
velikány, hluboko zaříznutými a velkolepými vodopády vznikla, když se před 65 miliony lety přes sebe posunuly
zemské desky.
