INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAJECTORY IN EASTERN EUROPE IN THE 16th—17th CENTU...Mike Vdovin
This document discusses the historical development of institutions in Eastern Europe, specifically analyzing land ownership and serfdom in Muscovy (Russia) and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th-17th centuries. It finds that while both states adopted serfdom, their approaches to land ownership differed. Muscovy developed contingent land ownership and a large manorial army to increase its military strength, while the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth strengthened private property rights and saw the rise of vested land ownership as central authority weakened. These divergent institutional trajectories impacted the political and economic development of the two states.
Mike Vdovin
This document discusses approaches to user experience (UX) design for responsive websites. It begins by explaining that UX encompasses creative and technical aspects to create seamless experiences for users across different devices. It then discusses the rise of mobile internet usage and how responsive design and adaptive design approaches can create flexible experiences across devices. Responsive design uses one code base that adapts layouts to different screens, while adaptive design prioritizes customized experiences for different contexts. The document considers factors for choosing an approach, such as analyzing user data and prioritizing a mobile-first design. It emphasizes designing for the majority of device traffic and letting user behavior dictate the experience.

Peter Lisowsky gave a presentation on podcasts and iTunes U. He defined what a podcast is and common misconceptions about them. Podcasts can include audio and video and are easy to create with free, simple tools like Audacity. iTunes U allows instructors to expand their curriculum by delivering audio and video content to students. It benefits education by providing a large library of free content and increasing accessibility through portability. GCU plans to begin setting up test content in Fall 2008 and go live in Spring 2009 with a pilot group of faculty using iTunes U.
Enserfment in The Great Princedom of Moscow: institutional perspectivesMike Vdovin
This document discusses the development of serfdom in Russia from an institutional perspective. It presents a model showing how serfdom could arise as a social contract between the Tsar and landed gentry. This contract established serfdom as a labor monopsony that benefited both parties by increasing their profits at the expense of peasant surplus. The model indicates serfdom was more likely to emerge under conditions of abundant land, high agricultural prices, and political inequality that entrenched the ruling parties' power over institutions.
