Fraudulent insurance claims in South Africa cost the industry around R10 billion annually. Improving the quality of data shared through the Insurance Data System could significantly reduce this, according to its steering committee chairman. However, only 22% of records in the system currently include complete vehicle identification details like VIN numbers, undermining its ability to identify fraudulent claims. TransUnion has redeveloped the system to make data submission and searches easier. But insurers must also improve their own data collection, storage and submission to enhance the system's effectiveness in fighting fraud and ensuring customers are charged appropriate rates.
