World War 1 lasted from 1914 to 1918 and involved many countries. Soldiers experienced terrible conditions, as trenches provided little comfort and protection, resulting in many deaths from trench foot. Gas masks of the time were uncomfortable and ineffective at preventing gas attacks. Powerful machine guns requiring multiple men to operate dominated battlefields and provided far greater firepower than individual rifles.
