SCHEDULE/RESULTS
WEST TEXAS A&M
- SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
EASTERN NEW MEXICO
The Greyhounds enter the weekend with an overall record of
18-31 with a 9-18 mark in Lone Star Conference play following
a midweek doubleheader against Lubbock Christian on Mon-
day in Lubbock as the Lady Chaps won both contests.
Eastern New Mexico is guided by third year head coach Katie
Welborn. In 2017, she guided the program to its first 20-win
season since 2007. Welborn was a two-time All-Lone Star
Conference selection as well as an NFCA All-American during
her playing career at Tarleton State .
The Greyhounds are led offensively by Erikka Burke who is
hitting .412 on the season with eight doubles, five triples and
15 homeruns to drive in 31 RBI with 111 total bases for a slug-
ging percentage of .847. In the circle, Hanna Gary leads the
way with a 5.72 ERA (5-7) as she has registered two complete
games in 30 appearances with 44 strikeouts in 85.2 innings
of work to allow an opposing batting average of .341.
ENMU is hitting .262 as a team with 58 doubles, two triples
and 51 homeruns to drive in 199 RBI for a team slugging per-
centage of .432. Defensively they have committed 70 errors
on 1,390 chances for a fielding clip of .950. In the circle, they
have registered a 6.52 staff ERA with 12 complete games,
two shutouts and 152 strikeouts while allowing an opposing
batting average of .342.
THE SERIES vs. ENMU
The Lady Buffs lead the all-time series against the Grey-
hounds, 33-13 in a series dating back to the 2006 season. WT
has claimed the last 28 meetings between the two teams with
the last ENMU win coming on April 18, 2010 in Portales. The
Hounds are 3-18 all-time in Canyon including 0-14 at Schaeffer
Park since the facility opened prior to the 2011 campaign.
SCHUTT SPORTS/NFCA PLAYER OF THE YEAR TOP-25
West Texas A&M’s Kylee Moore and Suka Van Gurp have
been named Top-25 finalists for the Schutt Sports/National
Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II National
Player of the Year announced on Monday afternoon.
This group of student-athletes is represented by 20 different
programs and 13 conferences. Ten student-athletes from the
original Top-50 “Watchlist” made the cut with the final group
consisting of nine seniors, eight juniors, seven sophomores
and one freshman.
The process began prior to the 2018 season as a Top-50
Watchlist was released followed by the release of the 25
finalists this afternoon, the NFCA offices will collect updated
statistics for the 25 finalists following the completion of
the regular season on Monday, April 30th followed by the
announcement of the 10 finalists on Tuesday, May 15th. The
winner will be announced on Monday, June 4th.
NFCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (APR. 25)
North Georgia took over the top spot in this week’s National
Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top-25 Poll
announced on Wednesday afternoon by the association’s
offices in Louisville, Kentucky. The NightHawks picked up 14
of the possible 16 first place votes for a total of 398 points fol-
lowed by Chico State (1 first place, 379), Colorado Mesa (1 first
place, 372), Southern Arkansas (347), North Alabama (343),
Angelo State (319), Winona State (300), Palm Beach Atlantic
(286), Lenoir-Rhyne (274) and Grand Valley State (243) to
round out the top ten.
The South Central Region was represented by Colorado
Mesa (3rd), Angelo State (6th), West Texas A&M (12th), Texas
A&M-Commerce (T-13th) Tarleton State (15th), Colorado Chris-
tian (RV) and Cameron.
WT SOFTBALL IN THE NFCA TOP-25 POLL
The Lady Buffs have been ranked inside of the NFCA Division
II Top-25 for 66 consecutive polls. The Lady Buffs have been
ranked in the Top-5 in 41 polls since the start of the 2014 sea-
son while sitting atop of the poll an incredible 29 times.
THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE
LSC teams are playing a single round-robin schedule with a
three-game series against each league opponent. The overall
LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning
percentage in regular-season conference games, while the
winner of the postseason championship will be recognized
as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s
automatic qualification into NCAA postseason.
LSC CAREER HOMERUN & RBI LEADER
Ashley Hardin became the new LSC career leader in homer-
uns back on Tuesday, March 13th in Lakewood, Colorado as
she tied a single game league record with three homeruns in
a game to push her career total to 67 to surpass former MSU
All-American Katelyn Vinson (2013-2016). Hardin became
the league’s new all-time leader in RBI on Sunday, April 15th
with a two-run homerun to left center at Schaeffer Park for
her 245th career RBI to pass former teammate and two-time
National Player of the Year Renee Erwin (2012-2015).

The Lady Buffs have turned Schaeffer Park into one of
the top home environments in all of NCAA Division II
Softball. WT is 220-36 (.859) at Schaeffer Park since
the facility opened prior to the 2011 season including
94-17 (.846) during regular season Lone Star Conference
games in Canyon. 2017 marked the sixth time in the last
seven years (‘11, ‘13, ‘14, ‘15, ‘16, ‘17) that the Lady Buffs
hosted NCAA Postseason action in Canyon.

LADY BUFFS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Lady Buffs made their fifth straight and seventh
overall appearance in the NCAA Division II Softball post-
season during the 2017 campaign.
The Lady Buffs are 26-16 all-time in the NCAA Postsea-
son including 18-10 in games played at Schaeffer Park.
WT is 5-2 in the College World Series as they claimed
the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship.
RELOAD NOT REBUILD
The Lady Buffs boast a roster of four All-Americans and
eight returners along with talented newcomers. WT
will be guided by Kilee Halbert in the circle while Kylee
Moore, Allie Smith, Ashley Hardin, Shanna McBroom,
Alyx Cordell, Kourtney Coveney and Shayne Starkey all
return to the starting lineup for the always powerful Lady
Buff lineup.
2017 IN-REVIEW
The Lady Buffs continued to prove themselves as one
of the top programs in all of Division II Softball during
the 2017 campaign as they claimed the program’s fourth
Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship and
hosted the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament
for the fifth straight season. The Lady Buffs hit .371 as a
team with 120 doubles, 10 triples and 98 homeruns to
drive in 401 RBI for an incredible slugging percentage of
.667. In the circle, the Lady Buffs registered a 2.47 ERA
as a staff with 26 complete games, and 11 shutouts (three
combined) to go along with 231 strikeout in 339.2 innings
of work to allow an opponent batting average of .268 on
the season.

Candace Abrams enters her first
season at the helm of the Lady Buffs
following three years as the program’s
top assistant.
Since arriving in Canyon, Abrams
has been a part of two Lone Star
Conference Championships as well as
a South Central Regional Title and trip
to the DII College World Series. Abrams
also serves as the staff advisor for the
“Hollerin Herd” and she was named the
2016 Advisor of the Year.
Abrams enters the 2018 season with
an overall career record of 202-65-1
(.754). The Tucson native registered her
100th career victory on May 9, 2015
in a 7-6 extra inning victory on Angelo
State during the NCAA South Central
Regional Tournament in Canyon. Her
200th career win came on May 5, 2017
as the Lady Buffs topped Cameron (7-6)
during the Semifinal Round of the LSC
Championship in San Angelo.
The Lady Buffs continued to prove
themselves as one of the top programs
in all of Division II Softball during the
2017 campaign as they claimed the
program’s fourth Lone Star Conference
Tournament Championship and hosted
the NCAA South Central Regional
Tournament for the fifth straight season.
The Lady Buffs hit .371 as a team with
120 doubles, 10 triples and 98 homeruns
to drive in 401 RBI for an incredible
slugging percentage of .667.
2016 was arguably one of the best
seasons in Lone Star Conference history
as the Lady Buffs finished the season
ranked fifth in the final NFCA DII Top-25
Poll with an overall record of 59-5 while
rolling thru the LSC with an incredible
mark of 30-2 to claim their third straight
conference title. The Lady Buffs started
out the season on a roll as they went
unbeaten in their first 30 contests to set
a new LSC and South Central Region
record for consecutive wins.
WT continued their dominance in
2015 as Abrams helped lead the Lady
Buffs to the program’s second straight
and third overall LSC Championship as
they finished the season 45-11 with a
22-6 mark in LSC play.
WT made national news during the
2015 season, remaining the top team
in the NFCA Division II Top-25 Poll for
a record 56-straight weeks (2/26/14
- 3/25/15). WT led the nation in four
offensive statustical categories during
the 2015 season while also hitting 102
homeruns to become the first team in
Division II history to reach the century
mark in back-to-back years.
Abrams came to Canyon in the
Summer of 2014 following a two year
stint as the head coach at Rocky
Mountain Athletic Conference member
Colorado Mesa. While at Mesa, she led
the Mavericks to the 2014 RMAC regular
season title with a 27-21 record while
finishing 2013 with an overall record of
28-17-1.
Abrams arrived in Grand Junction
following two years on the coaching
staff at University of Arizona. In 2012,
Abrams helped lead the Wildcats to the
NCAA Division I Super Regional title
game before bowing out to eventual
national runner-up, Oklahoma.
Prior to her arrival Arizona she spent
two years as assistant coach at NCAA
Division II Barry University, During her
tenure at Barry University she designed
and implemented drills for outfielders,
catchers and hitters while she
assisted in recruiting student-athletes,
fundraising and day-to-day operations.
Abrams began her coaching career as
an assistant coach at Pima Community
College in Tucson from 2005-2007,
the Aztecs won the NJCAA Division I
Championship in 2006.
A graduate of the University of
Arizona, Abrams played four years
under legendary head coach Mike
Candrea and was a member of the 2001
NCAA Division I National Championship
team. A four-year letterwinner, the
versatile Abrams played catcher and
outfield during her career with the
Wildcats. An Academic All-American
Honorable Mention, she graduated
with a bachelor’s degree in Physical
Education and State of Arizona Teaching
Certification in 2004. Abrams earned
her master’s degree in Sport and
Exercise Psychology in 2010 from Barry
University.

Lacey Taylor enters her second season as an Assistant Coach for the Lady Buffs after making the
transition from the field to the dugout in 2017 as the former Lady Buff All-American joined the WT
Softbal coaching staff. Taylor is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Sports Management from
West Texas A&M after graduating with her bachelor’s degree in Sports & Exercise Science in May
of 2016.
The Byers, Texas native was an instrumental part of WT’s continues success during her first
season on staff in 2017 as the Lady Buffs claimed the program’s fourth Lone Star Conference
Tournament Title and hosted the NCAA
South Central Regional Tournament for
the fifth straight season. The Lady Buffs hit
.371 as a team with 120 doubles, 10 triples
and 98 homeruns to drive in 401 RBI for an
incredible slugging percentage of .667.
Taylor became the fourth player in
program history to have her number honored on the outfield wall at
Schaeffer Park on Saturday, February 11th as her No. 23 joined Kim
LeComte (10), Alyssa Lemos (3) and Renee Erwin (34).
Taylor cemented herself as one of the top players to ever wear the
Maroon & White as she registered an overall record of 208-36 (.853)
during her career to become the winningest Lady Buff in history alongside
fellow four-year senior Brittany Gehle. Taylor led WT to an overall record
of 95-19 (.833) in Lone Star Conference play to claim three straight LSC
Titles along with a pair of LSC Tournament Titles.
The Lady Buffs turned Schaeffer Park into one of the best home
environments in the country as WT went an incredible 125-16 (.887) in
Canyon during Taylor’s career, leading all of Division II in attendance
in 2015 and 2016. WT hosted three NCAA South Central Regional
Tournaments and two South Central Super Regionals in which WT won
both and made a pair of appearances in the Division II College World
Series, winning the 2014 DII National Championship.
She finished her career with 214 appearances and 197 starts as she
registered a .362 batting average with 40 doubles, three triples and 30
homeruns to drive in 173 RBI for a slugging percentage of .619 while
walking 140
times for an on-base clip of .499. Behind the plate, she registered
the second highest fielding percentage in program history (.944) and
ranking fourth in putouts (775) with just five errors in four seasons.
