Elected officials determine health and safety laws and enforcement budgets through legislation and oversight of regulatory agencies. Very few Republicans support strengthening laws and enforcement to protect worker safety, while most Democrats do. Critics argue that less regulation and enforcement of safety laws could put workers in danger and drive jobs overseas.

In the House and Senate, a total of 140 members of Congress co-sponsored the Protecting America’s Workers Act of 2009, which would have given additional rights and protections to workers who needed to report possible safety hazards in their workplaces. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
[object Object],SENATE REPUBLICANS BLOCK DEMS’ EFFORT TO PASS MINE SAFETY BILL “ The Democrats' bill would hike the penalties for mine safety violations; expand whistleblower protections for workers who report hazards; empower federal investigators to close unsafe mines more easily; and grant regulators subpoena power when investigating mining accidents. A similar proposal was passed by the House Education and Labor Committee earlier in the year, with every Republican voting against it.” – THE HILL , September 2010 Zero Republicans on the House Labor Committee voted in favor of safety laws for miners.
