Writing a book review
Marina Rodriguez
What is a book review?
• It’s an easy way to let other people
know if you enjoyed a book, or not,
and why by describing, summarizing
and commenting on it.
• You could help them to make a choice
at the bookshop or in the library.
Important information to
include:
• The title
• The author
• The publisher
• The level (if it is a graded reader)
• Number of pages
The setting
• Where the story is set
• When it takes place
• The historical or sociocultural
background
Summarise the story
• Give a summary of the main parts of
the story.
• Don’t give away any plot twists, or
the ending.
• Make the book sound as exciting and
interesting as possible!
Describe the characters
• Give a brief account of the main
characters
- who they are
- the relationship
- physical description
- personality
- type of character (the bad guy, the
protagonist…)
Give your opinion
• Tell the reader whether you enjoyed
the book or not.
• Remember to give a reason for your
opinion!
