RULES :
• Quiz Master is ‘not’ the god. You can ask , argue , discuss about anything you want
but his final decision would be binding as is of a captain in a cricket team.
• Power-play : Each team can choose one round as their power-play and their points in
that round(including negatives) would be doubled. e.g. 40 -> 80 ; -20 -> -40 Therefore
each round is of 80 maximum points. There are 16 questions for pounce which would
be split into 1-8 and 9-16 for power-play. You can use it for only one round.(Pounce ,
Long connect ,Any One list it out of two)
• Free – Hit: If you ask for free hit then you would not get negative for that question . It
can be used for only one question. It cannot be used for List It. It cannot be used for
guessing the connect but can be used for one out of 4 questions of connect.
• It is compulsory to use Power-play but you may or may not use free- hit

If ever there was a time in my life when I was under extreme stress, it was during the 1996 World Cup
final as 12th man. Sanath [Jayasuriya] and Kalu [Romesh Kaluwitharana] got out early in that match. We
had Aravinda de Silva and Asanka Gurusinha batting for us. Just before the drinks break, when I went
out, I got bombarded with messages. People in the dressing room came up to tell me, "Give this
message to Aravinda", and "Make sure you tell Gura to hit out against spin only, and not pace."
Basically everyone in the dressing room had given me a different message that I absolutely had to pass
on. As I went down the steps, I found [coach] Dav Whatmore there. He spoke to me for about a minute,
with a message he wanted me to deliver. But I didn't understand a thing because back then my English
wasn't good, and in the end I just said, "Okay, Davvy" and ran out onto the field.
When I got to Aravinda and Gura, I completely choked. My mind was under so much stress, I didn't
remember a thing, so I just said something like, "Well played aiyya, keep going" and ran back. I got back
to the dressing room and someone came and ask me, "Pushy, did you tell them?" I said, "Yes I did." Then
someone else came and asked me, "Did you tell him what I said?" and I said yes to that as well. Then Dav
came to me and asked me something. I didn't understand, but I could tell by the way he was asking that
it was about the message. I said, "Yes, I told" in English. The others all believed I had relayed their
messages, but Dav looked at me like he wasn't so sure.
That whole thing was the most high-pressure moment I'd ever experienced. I will always remember us
winning the World Cup, but I will never forget being the messenger who couldn't deliver a single
message.
Who was that 12th Man ?
1.
Ans. Ravindra Pushpakumara - The messenger who couldn't deliver a
message . Ravindra Pushpakumara, the 12th man in the 1996 final,
was asked to pass on tons of advice to the batsmen in the middle.
But he didn't
Few years before Herschelle Gibbs put down Steve Waugh, X dropped Y in a very important
match. Y and his opening partner Z were going a ‘bit’ slow . Their go-slow tactics helped the X`s
team. Winning was going to be near-impossible here on. In this slow descent into chaos, the
catch was dropped. Was it deliberate?
"I could have watched them all day because I knew every over they batted was another nail in
their coffin," X said later. "A lot of people suggested I put the catch down purposefully just to
keep him in. It's not true, but it wouldn't have been a bad tactic.“
Y, who had taken 17 overs to reach double figures, was facing shortly after tea when he came
down the pitch to Richards and mistimed his stroke. The ball arced gently to X, an outstanding
fielder, even though he had already dropped Z, who was at wide mid-on. Just as slowly, X
dropped it, ending up on his back with the ball on the turf close by. Someone watching from
the lower tier of the Nursery End cheered the miss. A person next to him smiled. "Don't get too
excited," he grinned. “X dropped that on purpose. He's got a plan." He had a point.
GIVE X , Y and Z.

Ans. X – Clive llyod Y – Geoffery Boycott and Z- Mike Brearley
With a first class career spanning almost 2 decades,
he played illustriously for Gloucestershire
and Northamptonshire until retiring towards the end
of the last century. X was one of the most effective
overseas players in English cricket in the decade
from the mid 1980s, scoring 1000 runs in a season five
times.
His most famous international performance was in
1983 world cup and is however often lost, perhaps in
the glory of someone who overshadowed his effort
with a record-breaking innings of the world cup.
He became the coach of Zimbawe in 2005.

Ans. Kevin Curran
Had reduced India to 17/5 with figures of 3/5 before Kapil Dev took
over.
X and Y had planned it out a month before ICC World Cup 2003 had started. X was the brain behind
the protest. In an interview with NewA, Y later said: “X needed a black person, and a black person
with some influence. I certainly had that: I’d sung a song and people loved it. I was the first black
player to play for his country, and if I said something it had some weight. X is world class, I’m not, but
we’d got a combination of sport and music — Posh and Becks, if you like
Then, just before the match, they announced in front of the press that they would ____________________
______________ as a form of protest against the Z regime: “We have decided that _______________. In
doing so we are mourning the death of democracy in our beloved A. In doing so we are making a
silent plea to those responsible to stop the abuse of human rights in A. In doing so, we pray that our
small action may help to restore sanity and dignity to our nation.”
A is a country.
Give me the funda or name X and Y .
4.
Ans. X- Andy Flower , Y – Henry Olonga
They decided to wear black armbands while playing in the world cup.
X captained the UAE side during their brief participation in the 1996 World Cup. He was
the only native-born player, with almost all his team-mates being recently-imported
immigrants. A leg-spinner and middle-order batsman, he learned the basics of the
game while at school in Pakistan and went on to lead the UAE to 12 straight victories in
the ICC Trophy, ensuring their qualification for the World Cup. He is best remembered for
going out to face a rampant Allan Donald wearing only a sunhat. An unimpressed
Donald dug one in, and sure enough, scored a direct hit on X's head - he survived the
blow but lasted just another eight balls. As a cricketer, X was in over his head, but he
probably didn't mind too much. A wealthy man, he was probably the only player in the
tournament to own more than a dozen expensive cars.
X has 5 wickets and Sachin Tendulkar is one of them.
5.
Ans. Sultan Zarawani
X is the youngest person, male or female, to represent Australia in cricket and the first
Australian woman to have appeared in both cricket and association football World Cups.
X had missed a great deal of a the cup with an injured ankle. X`s replacement, Holly Ferling,
had done so well that X needn't have been tested. But X is a star, and X wanted to help win
the World Cup for the team. The team took a gamble on her fitness.
With the bat, X's ankle held up. X slogged the way to 25 off 22, the only batsman of X`s team
with a strike rate above 100, and woke up an innings that was dipping into a coma.
When X came onto bowl the opposition was in comfortable position. Instead of steaming in
and firing through the openers, X barely got to the crease for her first attempt. She pulled up,
limped and looked worried. As did every other Australian player. It didn't look like X'd get
through a ball, let alone an over. The second attempt was much the same. It ended in no
delivery, pain and worry.
X could have limped off. An injured ankle for a fast bowler is death.
But X refused to give up. X`s third attempt was painful to watch, it was someone hurting,
someone who didn't trust the body, but somehow X delivered a ball. Nothing great, but one
more than looked likely. Her team-mates screamed their support.
After three overs X had 3-2-2-3. 'll start as a gutsy effort that won a game X`s team
should have always won. Yet, in a few years time, as people forget the details and
just remember the result, it'll be known as the World Cup X won on one leg.

Shem Obado Ngoche (born June 6, 1989), known as Shem Ngoche, is a Kenyan cricketer. He is the
brother of three other Kenyan international cricketers, Lameck Onyango,James Ngoche and Nehemiah
Odhiambo.. One of a number of younger players starting to force their way into the Kenyan
national side, Shem Obado Ngoche is a diminutive left-arm spinner whose early performances
in the senior team suggested much promise as a limited-overs bowler. Often operating around
the wicket, Ngoche does not turn the ball much but has the gift of accuracy. Ngoche comes
from a strong cricket-playing family, with five of his siblings having represented the senior men's
and women's sides. He has been often compared to X , the New Zealan fast bowler who has
taken 233 wickets in 71 test matches.
What is his claim to fame ?
7.
Ans. He has played 3 balls in world cups (all in 2011) and has three ducks.
8. X’s act went on to cost his team a semi-final berth. If X had done the needful his
team would have reached the semi-final
However, what X gained was way, way more valuable than the exotic carpet
gifted to him later by Pakistan President Zia-ul-Haq. He ensured that cricket had
emerged victors that day. In a world where sport is often considered synonymous to
ruthless competitiveness, X had chosen to act differently.
X`s autobiography is named ‘Hear of the Lion.’
“X`s behaviour was always very magnanimous and his behaviour far exceeds
anything from the people who have been placed in the same position. I certainly
would not have taken it the way he did.” said once his country-mate.
X showed that the game could be played like a true gentleman if
one truly wanted to.
What did X do or rather not do ?
Ans. Pakistan needed 2 runs off the last ball with 1 wicket in hand , X(Courtney Walsh) could have easily
run the batsman Saleem Jaffar out for backing up too far but he just stopped and said to the
batsman ,” Don`t Do it and went back to bowling the last ball.”
West Indies were in their second straight final. Just like in 1975, they
were in trouble quickly after being inserted by England. At 99-4, Y was
joined by X. The 28-year-old Barbadian would put his more famous
partner under the shade as he smashed 86 off 66 balls in a partnership
of 139 to lead a stunning turn-around which according to me is one of
the most under-rated innings of World Cup final , Y pressed on for 138
not out, topped up with a six.

X represented Kenya in all of their first 25 official ODIs in a career which lasted from 1980 to
2003. Initially an attacking bowler who was happy to buy wickets, he evolved into a
parsimonious one-day expert. An ever-present, he took part in the 1996, 1999 and 2003 World
Cups, captaining them in the 1999 event, and also played in the 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1997
ICC Trophies. With a good variation of flight and length, he was consistently among the
wickets in the national leagues. He bowed out after the 2003 World Cup, and in their
penultimate match he won the Man-of-the-Match award with figures of 8.2-6-7-3. He also
captained his nation in Davis Cup tennis.
Name X.
Ans. Aasif Karim
If you think fairytales don’t translate into real life, then you would not have watched that Cricket
World Cup.
The Kenyans were using their games at the tournament as an opportunity to sight-see the vantage
points of South Asia. In fact, prior to the game against West Indies, when the Kenyans arrived in
Pune they didn’t even bother to visit the ground. They saw the game against the Caribbeans as an
opportunity to take some photographs with their idols.
Later in an interview Asif Karim said: “..hopefully one of us would get Brian Lara's wicket and we
could tell our grandsons.”
Responding to the target of 166, West Indies lost two early wickets. But at the crease was Brian
Lara, who could win matches under any circumstances. In Lara, the world had immense faith.
"Our only hope of winning was to get Lara early," said Hanumant Singh, the Kenyan coach.
However, Lara’s mind wasn’t where his body was. He swished and missed balls and survived a run
out chance after kick-starting his innings with a voluptuous cover drive. Lara was going like a
brakeless car, and Roland Holder was sent in with drinks to request him to slow down. Lara paid no
heed and edged behind to Tariq Iqbal, who after missing many catches and letting runs flow
between his legs managed to hang on to the most important one rather inelegantly.
“As soon as we got Lara's wicket, we were a different side” uttered Karim. Tariq Iqbal was certainly
a different man after catching Lara. He transformed into an exceptional keeper, not unlike a frail
young man becoming Captain America after being injected with a serum.
Why have been the words rather inelegantly used for that catch ?
10.
Ans. Tariq Iqbal used his groin to get hold of that catch.
Potentially one of the most effective bowlers of the 1990s, X was defeated by a
persistent back injury - but still left his mark on the game. Ironically, his only
world record was as a batsman when he took 101 minutes over a runless
innings. In his early days X tried to be a top-speed bounce bowler, but later
concentrated on making the ball swing. Best of all, X had a big heart, and
would toil away selflessly on the most unresponsive pitches, and he was a
much better batsman than that long duck innings would suggest but
his real claim to fame was in a World Cup playing for New Zealand.
What was his claim to fame ?
11.
Ans. Allott had a starring role as a left-arm medium-fast bowler in the 1999 World Cup, setting
a new record of 20 wickets in the seamer-friendly competition, a figure later equalled by
Shane Warne from one extra match.
12. Born in Christchurch, X turned out for Canterbury 'A' and New Zealand Under-19s - playing
alongside Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder at the Under-19 World Cup in 2001-02 - before opting
for Netherlands. A naturally talented allrounder, he had never been seriously coached until
joining up with the Dutch squad. X earned that nickname 'Baldrick' from his team-mates - after
the character in Blackadder - and is a chirpy presence in the field. Although his medium pace
was taken apart on his ODI debut against Sri Lanka, as he picked up 1 for 94 from his 10 overs,
his performances in the World Cricket League in Kenya where he averaged 21.25 in his three
games proved enough to earn him a place at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean. In the
same year X showed his allround ability when he narrowly missed out on a maiden one-day
international hundred, getting out stumped for 96 against Canada in Toronto. That confident
innings must surely have owed something to Netherlands' thrilling last-ball win over England in
the opening match of the ICC World Twenty20 at Lord's a month before. X played an
important role in that famous win, snapping up the wicket of Eoin Morgan and then cracking
a 25-ball 30 that included a monstrous six off Paul Collingwood in the course of a 50-run
partnership with Tom de Grooth that tilted the game for Netherlands. In January 2010 X was
part of the first group of Netherlands players to be awarded central contracts - a vital step in
the professionalisation of the game at Associate level - and was appointed captain of the
national side for the World Cricket League Division One tournament in July 2010.
X had the privilege to captain his team in an ODI world cup.

13. There are a total of 46 players who have
captained their side in an under -19 world cup and
then went onto become the captain of the national
side . Out of those 46 there are very few who went
onto captain the senior side in an ODI world cup but
very few probably no one is like me who was part of
2 U-19 World Cup`s . I made my U-19 world cup
debut in 2004 at age of 16 , was the captain in 2006
U-19 world cup. I have been on top of the ODI all-
rounder ratings
Identify me .
Ans. Angello Matthews
14. It was a very important match and team batting first had scored 286 in the
allotted overs with 3 batsman out for a duck and one left stranded at 0 not
out of 2 balls. The team batting second was cruising along at one time at
183/2 and in no time they sank like a broken ship to be all out on 194 with 5
batsman getting out for a duck. This match is regarded as one of the
‘duckiest match’ of all time.
Which match am I talking about ?
Ans. !979 World Cup final
15. X was born into a Nawanagar royal family which has a cricketing pedigree. His
relatives include K. S. Ranjitsinhji, after whom the Ranji Trophy is named, and K. S.
Duleepsinhji, for whom the Duleep Trophy is named. X captained India in 13 ODI`s
and Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore was his favourite hunting ground and is
very famous for his special knock in which he blasted one of the best bowlers of that
time all round the park in the same stadium.
X was a regular in the Indian cricket team between 1992 and 2000, playing 15 Test
matches and 196 One Day Internationals.
He made his debut in a World Cup match and did not get to bowl , bat and field in
that match. Why ?
Ans. X - Ajaysinhji Daulatsinhji Jadeja
India batted first but the match was washed out after 2 balls being bowled.
16. X is a gifted all-rounder who represented his country at various age group levels,
including the 1996 Under-15 World Cup in England and the Under-17 tour of the UK two
years later, he made making his ODI debut in Sri Lanka in 2002. Prior to the 2003 World Cup
in South Africa he spent three months over there, which paid dividends as he hit his highest
ODI score of 62 against India and followed that by picking up 3 for 16 against England with
his leg spin, dismissing Nick Knight, Michael Vaughan and Andrew Flintoff. In 2004 his
reputation was further enhanced as he smashed the MCC Young Cricketers record for the
fastest hundred when, against Surrey Under-19, he took just 38 balls to reach the landmark.
His form going into the 2007 World Cup was patchy, and although he hit the headlines
there it was for the wrong reasons. On his return home he surprisingly announced that he
was making himself unavailable for international cricket, citing a lack of time as the
reason, but returned in 2008
We however remember him for something completely different, what would that be

1 a) On his first Test tour of England in 1997, X finished a six-game series with an
astonishing 36-wicket haul that included an innings tally of 8 for 38. Two years later,
he was back in the country with his team for the World Cup, looking to recreate
some of that form.
Both X and his team were stuttering in the tournament. After losses to New Zealand
and Pakistan, His team needed to beat West Indies in Manchester to progress to
the Super Six stage. X had a plan, but rather than carry it quietly he made a very
public announcement. In his newspaper column, he predicted he'd take care of
the worrying threat of Brian Lara and grab five wickets. Nobody else in the team
would have contemplated such rhetoric, especially someone operating below his
best.
The self-belief and manufactured pressure spurred X to a brilliant performance that
secured his team`s passage to the next stage. West Indies were blown away for 110
and X, who was back opening after a first-change experiment, picked up 5 for 14
off 8.4 overs. Most importantly, he fulfilled his claim that he would topple Lara.
Name X.
1 b) An Indian batting giant who considered him to be one of the greatest
batsman he saw named his son after him(X) , another famous Australian spinner
Robert Holland named his son after him as he was his all time favourite cricketing
hero(X). Born at Port Mourant on British Guyana, X played for the country from
1954-55 until 1973-74. In his early days he was a wicketkeeper as well as a
pugnacious middle-order batsman; indeed, in his first three Tests he kept wicket
before Franz Alexander took over behind the stumps. X deputised as keeper on
several other occasions. One-day cricket was in its infancy as X's career drew to a
close, and he only played in seven ODIs. However, he went out on a high Who is
X?
1 c) X (born 19 April 1966, Box Hill, Victoria) is a former Australian cricketer who
played in 35 Tests and 92 ODIs . After retirement he became a First Class cricket
umpire. He is currently a member of the ICC Elite Umpire Panel. X's career best
bowling figures of 6–71 came at Edgbaston in 1993. Throughout his career he took
104 wickets at 26.96 in 35 Tests, taking 5 or more wickets in an innings five times. An
accurate bowler whose main attacking weapon was seam bowling, X was a more
than handy batsman. While limited in his shot making ability, he had a solid
defence. X was a Victorian cricket captain who was notorious for declaring a
Victorian innings closed in 2001 with Michael Klinger on 99 not out.
Name X.
1d) Few would dispute that X was the finest cricketer his country has produced, or
the biggest heartthrob. Suave, erudite and monstrously talented, he gave cricket in
the subcontinent real sex appeal in the 1970s and 1980s. He played hardly any
domestic cricket in his own country: instead he just flew in for home series from
Worcestershire or Sussex, or rather from the more fashionable London salons.
X giving an interview to a channel had said that following semi-final victory over he
had suggested team manager to provide sleeping pills the players so they can
complete their sleep.
X further said that the reason behind giving sleeping pills was that players can relax
and complete their sleep and participate in the final will full concentration.
X is also a philanthropist, cricket commentator, chancellor of the University of
Bradford.

IIT Kanpur World cup quiz finals 2015

  • 1.
  • 2. RULES : • Quiz Master is ‘not’ the god. You can ask , argue , discuss about anything you want but his final decision would be binding as is of a captain in a cricket team. • Power-play : Each team can choose one round as their power-play and their points in that round(including negatives) would be doubled. e.g. 40 -> 80 ; -20 -> -40 Therefore each round is of 80 maximum points. There are 16 questions for pounce which would be split into 1-8 and 9-16 for power-play. You can use it for only one round.(Pounce , Long connect ,Any One list it out of two) • Free – Hit: If you ask for free hit then you would not get negative for that question . It can be used for only one question. It cannot be used for List It. It cannot be used for guessing the connect but can be used for one out of 4 questions of connect. • It is compulsory to use Power-play but you may or may not use free- hit
  • 3. BOUNCERS to POUNCE UPON +10/-10(without PP)
  • 4. If ever there was a time in my life when I was under extreme stress, it was during the 1996 World Cup final as 12th man. Sanath [Jayasuriya] and Kalu [Romesh Kaluwitharana] got out early in that match. We had Aravinda de Silva and Asanka Gurusinha batting for us. Just before the drinks break, when I went out, I got bombarded with messages. People in the dressing room came up to tell me, "Give this message to Aravinda", and "Make sure you tell Gura to hit out against spin only, and not pace." Basically everyone in the dressing room had given me a different message that I absolutely had to pass on. As I went down the steps, I found [coach] Dav Whatmore there. He spoke to me for about a minute, with a message he wanted me to deliver. But I didn't understand a thing because back then my English wasn't good, and in the end I just said, "Okay, Davvy" and ran out onto the field. When I got to Aravinda and Gura, I completely choked. My mind was under so much stress, I didn't remember a thing, so I just said something like, "Well played aiyya, keep going" and ran back. I got back to the dressing room and someone came and ask me, "Pushy, did you tell them?" I said, "Yes I did." Then someone else came and asked me, "Did you tell him what I said?" and I said yes to that as well. Then Dav came to me and asked me something. I didn't understand, but I could tell by the way he was asking that it was about the message. I said, "Yes, I told" in English. The others all believed I had relayed their messages, but Dav looked at me like he wasn't so sure. That whole thing was the most high-pressure moment I'd ever experienced. I will always remember us winning the World Cup, but I will never forget being the messenger who couldn't deliver a single message. Who was that 12th Man ? 1.
  • 5.

  • 7. Few years before Herschelle Gibbs put down Steve Waugh, X dropped Y in a very important match. Y and his opening partner Z were going a ‘bit’ slow . Their go-slow tactics helped the X`s team. Winning was going to be near-impossible here on. In this slow descent into chaos, the catch was dropped. Was it deliberate? "I could have watched them all day because I knew every over they batted was another nail in their coffin," X said later. "A lot of people suggested I put the catch down purposefully just to keep him in. It's not true, but it wouldn't have been a bad tactic.“ Y, who had taken 17 overs to reach double figures, was facing shortly after tea when he came down the pitch to Richards and mistimed his stroke. The ball arced gently to X, an outstanding fielder, even though he had already dropped Z, who was at wide mid-on. Just as slowly, X dropped it, ending up on his back with the ball on the turf close by. Someone watching from the lower tier of the Nursery End cheered the miss. A person next to him smiled. "Don't get too excited," he grinned. “X dropped that on purpose. He's got a plan." He had a point. GIVE X , Y and Z. 2.

In an interview with NewA, Y later said: “X needed a black person, and a black person with some influence. I certainly had that: I’d sung a song and people loved it. I was the first black player to play for his country, and if I said something it had some weight. X is world class, I’m not, but we’d got a combination of sport and music — Posh and Becks, if you like Then, just before the match, they announced in front of the press that they would ____________________ ______________ as a form of protest against the Z regime: “We have decided that _______________. • 16. X captained the UAE side during their brief participation in the 1996 World Cup. He was the only native-born player, with almost all his team-mates being recently-imported immigrants. A leg-spinner and middle-order batsman, he learned the basics of the game while at school in Pakistan and went on to lead the UAE to 12 straight victories in the ICC Trophy, ensuring their qualification for the World Cup. He is best remembered for going out to face a rampant Allan Donald wearing only a sunhat. An unimpressed Donald dug one in, and sure enough, scored a direct hit on X's head - he survived the blow but lasted just another eight balls. As a cricketer, X was in over his head, but he probably didn't mind too much. A wealthy man, he was probably the only player in the tournament to own more than a dozen expensive cars. X has 5 wickets and Sachin Tendulkar is one of them. 5.

  • 19. X is the youngest person, male or female, to represent Australia in cricket and the first Australian woman to have appeared in both cricket and association football World Cups. X had missed a great deal of a the cup with an injured ankle. X`s replacement, Holly Ferling, had done so well that X needn't have been tested. But X is a star, and X wanted to help win the World Cup for the team. The team took a gamble on her fitness. With the bat, X's ankle held up. X slogged the way to 25 off 22, the only batsman of X`s team with a strike rate above 100, and woke up an innings that was dipping into a coma. When X came onto bowl the opposition was in comfortable position. Instead of steaming in and firing through the openers, X barely got to the crease for her first attempt. She pulled up, limped and looked worried. As did every other Australian player. It didn't look like X'd get through a ball, let alone an over. The second attempt was much the same. It ended in no delivery, pain and worry. X could have limped off. An injured ankle for a fast bowler is death. But X refused to give up. X`s third attempt was painful to watch, it was someone hurting, someone who didn't trust the body, but somehow X delivered a ball. Nothing great, but one more than looked likely. Her team-mates screamed their support. After three overs X had 3-2-2-3. 'll start as a gutsy effort that won a game X`s team should have always won. Yet, in a few years time, as people forget the details and just remember the result, it'll be known as the World Cup X won on one leg. 6.

He is the brother of three other Kenyan international cricketers, Lameck Onyango,James Ngoche and Nehemiah Odhiambo.. One of a number of younger players starting to force their way into the Kenyan national side, Shem Obado Ngoche is a diminutive left-arm spinner whose early performances in the senior team suggested much promise as a limited-overs bowler. Often operating around the wicket, Ngoche does not turn the ball much but has the gift of accuracy. Ngoche comes from a strong cricket-playing family, with five of his siblings having represented the senior men's and women's sides. He has been often compared to X , the New Zealan fast bowler who has taken 233 wickets in 71 test matches. What is his claim to fame ? 7.

If X had done the needful his team would have reached the semi-final However, what X gained was way, way more valuable than the exotic carpet gifted to him later by Pakistan President Zia-ul-Haq. He ensured that cricket had emerged victors that day. In a world where sport is often considered synonymous to ruthless competitiveness, X had chosen to act differently. X`s autobiography is named ‘Hear of the Lion.’ “X`s behaviour was always very magnanimous and his behaviour far exceeds anything from the people who have been placed in the same position. I certainly would not have taken it the way he did.” said once his country-mate. X showed that the game could be played like a true gentleman if one truly wanted to. What did X do or rather not do ?

Initially an attacking bowler who was happy to buy wickets, he evolved into a parsimonious one-day expert. An ever-present, he took part in the 1996, 1999 and 2003 World Cups, captaining them in the 1999 event, and also played in the 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1997 ICC Trophies. With a good variation of flight and length, he was consistently among the wickets in the national leagues. He bowed out after the 2003 World Cup, and in their penultimate match he won the Man-of-the-Match award with figures of 8.2-6-7-3. He also captained his nation in Davis Cup tennis. Name X.

  • 34. If you think fairytales don’t translate into real life, then you would not have watched that Cricket World Cup. The Kenyans were using their games at the tournament as an opportunity to sight-see the vantage points of South Asia. In fact, prior to the game against West Indies, when the Kenyans arrived in Pune they didn’t even bother to visit the ground. They saw the game against the Caribbeans as an opportunity to take some photographs with their idols. Later in an interview Asif Karim said: “..hopefully one of us would get Brian Lara's wicket and we could tell our grandsons.” Responding to the target of 166, West Indies lost two early wickets. But at the crease was Brian Lara, who could win matches under any circumstances. In Lara, the world had immense faith. "Our only hope of winning was to get Lara early," said Hanumant Singh, the Kenyan coach. However, Lara’s mind wasn’t where his body was. He swished and missed balls and survived a run out chance after kick-starting his innings with a voluptuous cover drive. Lara was going like a brakeless car, and Roland Holder was sent in with drinks to request him to slow down. Lara paid no heed and edged behind to Tariq Iqbal, who after missing many catches and letting runs flow between his legs managed to hang on to the most important one rather inelegantly. “As soon as we got Lara's wicket, we were a different side” uttered Karim. Tariq Iqbal was certainly a different man after catching Lara. He transformed into an exceptional keeper, not unlike a frail young man becoming Captain America after being injected with a serum. Why have been the words rather inelegantly used for that catch ? 10.

  • 37. Potentially one of the most effective bowlers of the 1990s, X was defeated by a persistent back injury - but still left his mark on the game. Ironically, his only world record was as a batsman when he took 101 minutes over a runless innings. In his early days X tried to be a top-speed bounce bowler, but later concentrated on making the ball swing. Best of all, X had a big heart, and would toil away selflessly on the most unresponsive pitches, and he was a much better batsman than that long duck innings would suggest but his real claim to fame was in a World Cup playing for New Zealand. What was his claim to fame ? 11.

  • 40. 12. Born in Christchurch, X turned out for Canterbury 'A' and New Zealand Under-19s - playing alongside Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder at the Under-19 World Cup in 2001-02 - before opting for Netherlands. A naturally talented allrounder, he had never been seriously coached until joining up with the Dutch squad. X earned that nickname 'Baldrick' from his team-mates - after the character in Blackadder - and is a chirpy presence in the field. Although his medium pace was taken apart on his ODI debut against Sri Lanka, as he picked up 1 for 94 from his 10 overs, his performances in the World Cricket League in Kenya where he averaged 21.25 in his three games proved enough to earn him a place at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean. In the same year X showed his allround ability when he narrowly missed out on a maiden one-day international hundred, getting out stumped for 96 against Canada in Toronto. That confident innings must surely have owed something to Netherlands' thrilling last-ball win over England in the opening match of the ICC World Twenty20 at Lord's a month before. X played an important role in that famous win, snapping up the wicket of Eoin Morgan and then cracking a 25-ball 30 that included a monstrous six off Paul Collingwood in the course of a 50-run partnership with Tom de Grooth that tilted the game for Netherlands. In January 2010 X was part of the first group of Netherlands players to be awarded central contracts - a vital step in the professionalisation of the game at Associate level - and was appointed captain of the national side for the World Cricket League Division One tournament in July 2010. X had the privilege to captain his team in an ODI world cup.

In 2004 his reputation was further enhanced as he smashed the MCC Young Cricketers record for the fastest hundred when, against Surrey Under-19, he took just 38 balls to reach the landmark. His form going into the 2007 World Cup was patchy, and although he hit the headlines there it was for the wrong reasons. Two years later, he was back in the country with his team for the World Cup, looking to recreate some of that form. Both X and his team were stuttering in the tournament. After losses to New Zealand and Pakistan, His team needed to beat West Indies in Manchester to progress to the Super Six stage. X had a plan, but rather than carry it quietly he made a very public announcement. In his newspaper column, he predicted he'd take care of the worrying threat of Brian Lara and grab five wickets. Nobody else in the team would have contemplated such rhetoric, especially someone operating below his best. The self-belief and manufactured pressure spurred X to a brilliant performance that secured his team`s passage to the next stage. West Indies were blown away for 110 and X, who was back opening after a first-change experiment, picked up 5 for 14 off 8.4 overs. Most importantly, he fulfilled his claim that he would topple Lara.
