the order for H&H
Retrieve computer driven label
for test tube
Go to supply cart in hallway to
retrieve supplies, enter numeric
code
Gather supplies: 2X2 gauze, 1
tourniquet, 1 butterfly needle,
vacutainer, alcohol pads, tape,
2 purple top test tubes,
Walk into pt’s room, re-
introduce self. Wash hands with
soap, rinse and dry
Explain to pt. what you are
going to do, get their verbal
“ok”
Visually examine each arm for
the best veins, watch for
bruising
Assess for any arm precautions,
make decision on which arm is
to be used
Open gauze, leave on wrapper,
place on bedside table, open
butterfly needle, leave in
wrapper and place on bedside
table
Attach vacutainer to the end of
the butterfly needle by a
turning motion, leave on
bedside table
Apply gloves
Place tourniquet on selected
arm about 2 inches above
anticubital space
Wait for vein to enlarge,
palpate it with fingers
Wipe the site with alcohol pad,
let dry 10 sec.
Grab butterfly needle, hold with
bevel up and insert in vein at
45* or less angle depending on
the pt.S size
Obtain a flash of blood, attach 1
test tube to the vacutainer for a
blood waste, place to the side
Attach the 2nd purple top test
tube to the vacutainer
Fill it ½ way with blood, remove
tube from vacutainer, place on
table
Place 2X2 gauze over needle
insertion site, press black
button on butterfly needle and
remove needle while holding
pressure at insertion site,
secure with tape.
Place label on purple tube that
is on the table.
Put waste test tube and
butterfly needle in sharps
container.
Throw away any other garbage
Remove gloves
Wash hands with soap, rinse
and dry
Place test tube in biohazard bag
and then in pneumatic tube and
press to send it to the lab
