Wollies Animal Project
Charity work is the act of donating either ones time, food, objects or simply ones love
to a cause that will appreciate it. I chose to donate my time at Wollies which was my
charity of choice. Wollies is an animal shelter for not only dogs but cats too. Wollies
is a place that not only looks after homeless dogs and cats; they show those animals
love and what it means to be loved. The animals at Wollies are very well looked
after, they get daily food and treats, clean water, they have warm beds and kennels
to sleep in and for some fun they also have toys and friends to play with. Due to the
large number of homeless dogs they keep multiple dogs in large enclosures. The
enclosures the dogs are kept in are large enough for the dogs to roam, play, run and
of course stretch out for a good nap. The enclosures also have shaded areas for the
dogs so that on hot days the dogs can shield themselves from the sun.
At Wollies I chose to work with the dogs only, due to the fact that I’m allergic to cats.
Firstly, I just want to add that on my first encounter at Wollies the staff was so kind
and welcoming and I could really tell they appreciated the time I was donating
towards the animals. Working at Wollies gave me a new appreciation for the hard
work that people put into this animal project. Not only is it a fun experience but it is of
course hard work too. My first job was to make sure all the dogs had clean water,
and if they did not I had to wash out their bowls and give them clean water to drink.
What made giving them clean water fun was seeing them drink the clean water and
then them coming up to me for some love and cuddles. My second job was to shake
out their blankets to get rid of any sand and excess dog hair on them. I then had to
make their beds for them so that it was ready for them whenever they chose to use
it. Shaking out their blankets was sometimes a fun task because some dogs took it
as a game. They would run up to me (shaking the blanket), grab onto the blanket
and thus a tug of war game would begin. All the while whichever dog was tugging on
the blanket would have a wagging tail showing me that this was fun for them. My
third job was to give each dog I encountered a treat. This was fun because I could
really see how much these dogs enjoyed their treats. And my last job was to play,
rub and in general give the dogs the attention they deserved. This was the most fun
out of the entire thing I did. All the dogs loved it when I sat down on the ground and
simply gave them a good scratch. Some of the dogs enjoyed playing (fetch or tug of
war) more than getting a good rub but all in all I didn’t mind doing either.
Wollies animal shelter is located at 101 Rooikat Street in Pretoria. I worked at
Wollies on two different days. The first day was on the 24th of September 2016 in
which I worked from 09:00am to 01:00pm which in total means I worked 4 hours.
The second day was on the 1st of October 2016 in which I worked from 09:00am to
12:00am which in total means I worked 3 hours on that day. All in all I worked 7
hours at Wollies animal shelter and it most definitely won’t be the last time I work
there.
It was such a wonderful feel good experience and it’s definitely something I will not
mind experiencing again. Even though it’s hard work and it definitely breaks a sweat
it is so worth is seeing how happy the animals were after spending some time with
them. I appreciate the work that people do for all the dogs and cats at Wollies animal
shelter. It warms my heart knowing that even though these dogs and cats don’t have
a home for now that they are getting the best treatment they could possibly receive
for the predicament they are in. Wollies also has a policy that no dogs or cats will be
put to sleep if they aren’t adopted soon enough which makes me even more happy
to donate my time to them, knowing all the dogs and cats that are there have a good
chance at life. Wollies also host many charity events such as dog walks and so forth
to bring attention to the dogs and cats that still need adopting. It also warms my
heart knowing that they inspect future dog owner’s homes to ensure all their animals
are going to be looked after once they have been adopted. All in all Wollies is an
amazing place that has done so much good for homeless animals. If anyone should
wish to adopt a pet my first advice would be to go look at Wollies. There are many
kind, gentle and loving soles at Wollies and I’m not just talking about the animals I’m
talking about the staff as well.

This is one of many amazing
kennels that the dogs get to

spacious but it also has a
cosy bed inside for the dogs
to sleep on.
This is how I knew which dog

I was dealing with at that
specific time.
Here is another example of

So many dogs and so much
love to give. Here’s also an

provided for the dogs.
