A ring main is a circuit that runs in a loop or ring configuration around a home, delivering electricity from both ends of the circuit to sockets. This layout imposes less load on the cables than a single-direction radial circuit. Ring mains use 2.5mm diameter two-core and earth cable and are limited to powering a maximum floor area of 100 square meters with no more than 50 meters of cable if protected by a miniature circuit breaker or 60 meters if protected by a cartridge fuse. Appliances that use significant power must have their own dedicated circuits.
