When building a large structure, ironworkers say
they are “topping out” when they put the last
structural piece in place. This does not mean that
the building is finished but instead that it has
reached its highest point.

3.  Over many years, it has become customary to hoist
an American flag and a small evergreen tree into
place along with the last structural beam. In South
Florida, the evergreen is replaced with a palm tree.
Hundreds of years ago, Scandinavian craftsmen
placed trees or sheathes of grain on top of new
structures to appease forest spirits. Today,
construction crews send up trees, usually
evergreens, as a good-luck charm and celebration
of the project’s success up to that point. Topping
out ceremonies have become popular for large
projects, as well.
