Why and How to Use
Social Media for Local Business
People talk about social media every single day, and a large
number of us use Facebook or Twitter more frequently than
drinking tea /coffee. Many companies, including many small
businesses, have successfully gained a presence on one or even
multiple mainstream social networking sites. However I noticed
that many local businesses, in my opinion, still ignore the
power and influence of social media. How? They either don’t
have a simple message showing in/outside of their store saying
“following us on Twitter” / “like us on Facebook”, or at least
they are not doing it the right way. Let’s discuss a few reasons
to strengthen your faith on this, and then allow me to share a
few tips and tricks that could work well for you and improve
your business performance.
Same Old Question – Why Social Media for Local Business?
Here I’m going to list a few, of many, good reasons:
1. Your customers are there
Simply because a lot of your customers spend quite a lot of
time on social media London networks everyday (especially if
you have many younger customers visiting your store
regularly).
2. People search if you are on there
Do you want to disappoint your customers if they search for
you on social networks? Don’t be surprised, a lot of people
have the curiosity to do it and always want to know more about
what you up to in their own way.
3. Cheapest and yet most effective “always-on” communication
As long as they use social media training London you can keep
them up-to-date with your latest news, stories or even share
jokes with them. Communicate with your customers and learn
what they think so you can constantly improve your business.

This sounds like a bizarre one but I think it’s definitely worth
mentioning. If you own a local pub, for instance, you might

customers. A simple ‘happy hour’ or ‘special event’ message on
Facebook could remind them that they can have an even better

Most social networking sites allow you to connect with your
customers for free. Simply spend some time learning the tricks
and processes, then go ahead and implement them, see how
far you can go. Nothing to lose and no strings attached.
6. Fame building
Alright suppose you are selling very unique or even funky
products or services (but legal of course), then you might
‘accidentally’ build a reputation over time as people love to
share their exciting or entertaining life stories with their friends
online.
A Few How-To Tips
1. Get new ‘likes’ and followers
If you haven’t already done it, do it now! A deadly simple thing
to do, put up a board or notice somewhere outside your shop
asking customers or passengers to like your Facebook page or
follow you on Twitter. If you really want to push it hard, give
away small gifts or perks for free for the subscribers. People
love to make tiny little effort in exchange for freebies.
If you have some spare cash, invest a small amount on
Facebook advertising or Google AdWords to raise awareness.
Select your target audience accurately and send your name out.
Even a continuous £50 a month could potentially get you
followers that might turn into regular visitors of your business.
2. Update them with your news
Plenty of things you can update them about your business day-
in day-out. Letting your customers know what new
product/service you have in store, what exciting or strange
things happened lately related to your business or industry.If
you have any new offers or discounts always put them on social
networks to make sure your followers will see them in case
they are not physically around your store to see your notice
board.
3. Be Personal
Let’s be honest, your business is not a human being and no one
wants to speak to a logo. Using your personal profile to update
things on your business page and reply to comments is arguably
a good way to increase user engagement, so that your
followers get a sense that they are speaking to an actual
person.
4. Share unique and interesting content
Be different and be entertaining. Why do you think most
people use social networking sites so much each day anyway?
Frankly speaking, because they are bored and they always look
for exciting things – either something to make them laugh or
something to inspire them. So share a photo of a delightful
moment in your shop, a one line text describing a small incident
in your store that could provocate positive thinking. The key
and goal is to keep your followers engaged and encourage
them to think about your shop all the time.
5. Genuinely ask your followers for opinions
