2. Our Mission :
To inspire the people of Earth to
explore other worlds, understand
our own, and seek life elsewhere.
3. Who we are :
• Founded in 1980 by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray, and Louis
Friedman
• We involve and inspire the public through:
• Advocacy
• Projects
• Education
• We are a non-profit funded by our international membership
• We operate a Volunteer Network for members who want to
become more involved
4. Program areas:
• Advocacy and Education
• Extrasolar Planets
• Innovative Technologies
• International Mission Participation
• Mars Exploration
• Near Earth Objects
• Search for Extraterrestrial Life
5. Some of our current projects:
LightSail – ultralight spacecraft propelled
purely by sunlight, which will launch soon
piggybacking on a future NASA mission.
LightSail-1 will be sailing soon. How
fast will it go?
LIFE Experiment- Shuttle LIFE was a
practice run for Phobos-Grunt, which will be
sending microbes to Mars’ Phobos and
back. Is it possible for microorganisms
to survive a trip through space?
Near Earth Objects – a huge threat, what
if we found an asteroid on a collision
course with Earth?.What are our best
options for planetary defense?

Editor's Notes
Bill Nye took over as Executive Director in November 2010 when Louis Freedman stepped down. He has an exciting new vision of how to make the Planetary Society friendly for all generations.

This slide has animation. Clicking the mouse or hitting ‘enter’ will cause the bullets to appear: <click> The Planetary Society (TPS) was founded in 1980 by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray, and Louis Friedman and celebrated it’s 30 th anniversary in 2010. Louis Friedman is still very involved and is Project Manager for the LightSail program. <click> TPS advocates exploration both of space and our Earth. TPS has often testified before congress regarding the space program and weighs in on decisions that are made. TPS also initiates and maintains numerous projects on our own including our current LightSail project, our biggest undertaking yet. TPS also encourages science education and many members present at schools and public events. <click> TPS is a non-profit and is receives no government funding. This is by design so that TPS can function as an independent entity and represent th wishes of our members. All monies received by TPS are from membership dues or donations. <click> One of TPS’s strongest resources is our Volunteer Network. Through this network, astronomy clubs in different cities meet and engage in fun and interesting activities Banner: Computer rendered galactic image
TPS has over two dozen projects in progress at this time, too much to explain here. This is a high-level look at program areas in which TPS is currently involved. More information can be found on the website at: http://www.planetary.org/home/ Banner: Milky Way over Bryce Canyon, Utah

TPS has almost two dozen projects that we are currently planning or managing. Three of the most high-profile ones are represented on this slide: <click> LIFE Experiment – LIFE Experiment tests the ‘transpermia’ hypothesis, the theory that life can travel from one object in the solar system to the other. Most recently, Shuttle LIFE flew aboard the last flight of the shuttle Endeavor. We will be opening the capsule soon when Phobos-Grunt launches, taking a second capsule on a three-year trip to Phobos and back <click> LightSail – The LightSail program encompasses three planned missions to explore how lightweight solar sails can help in exploration, gathering data, and early warning systems for Earth. LightSail 1 is in the final stages of completion and has been slated to piggyback on a future NASA rocket launch <click> The Shoemaker NEO grant helped us fund the search for NEO’s. Now we’re looking at the Mirror Bees concept of using mirrors to nudge a dangerous asteroid out of the way of earth’s orbit.
Shuttle LIFE is the first phase of the Phobos LIFE project. Shuttle LIFE involved flying 5 different types of microorganisms on board the shuttle Endeavor’s last mission. After spending about two weeks in space, the microorganisms safely returned to earth and will be studied to see how their trip in space affected them. The second phase involves sending another set of the same microorganisms to Mars as a part of the Phobos-Grunt mission. Phobos-Grunt is a Russian mission designed to visit Mars’ moon Phobos and return a sample of Phobos soil to earth. LightSail is a three-part mission designed to test solar sails in space. LightSail-1 is the first ship and is in the process of being built. The Planetary Report is our quarterly magazine. Includes project information, member news, and news from around space. Our Planetary Radio station features interviews every week with scientists, engineers, advocates, project managers or writers on a space-related topic. Recent topics include Voyager 1 at the Edge of the Solar System and Exploring a Super-Earth’s Atmosphere. We also post podcasts of our shows that can be accessed on our website. Planetary.org is our official website, it is full of project information, news from around space, and great information on how to get involved. Our ‘Explore’ section is full of information from both within and without our solar system. You can get lost there for hours.
