Who am I ?
I’m Meimei Yang and I think I’m a pretty big expert on myself so I’ll tell you all about it
So, I was born on May 5th aka Cinco de Mayo, which is the day that commemorates the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla (P-huai-la) on May 5, 1862.
I was also born only 10 minutes before Midnight that day in Kunming China’s general hospital, so if I was born 11 minutes later my birthday would have been a completely different day.
Some celebrities I share my birthday with are Adele, Bart Baker, Hank Green and Chris Brown
So now I’ll just show you a short video of my hometown – Kunming, China
If any of you ever go to Kunming, don’t expect it to look like that because there’s constant construction and improvements being made and many building are being torn down as we speak.
Alright so my name relates to my birthday – can anyone guess how?
Yeah so I was born on 5/5 or May 5th
May is the 5th month of the year
So 5/5 = May/May
So my name is my birthday in a sense – Meimei
However Meimei actually means Pretty Pretty in Chinese
And that’s how it’s written in Chinese characters
My background - if it isn’t obvious - is completely Chinese however, it’s made up of 2 ethnic minorities that I know of and maybe more
In China, there are 56 different ethnic minority groups each with different traditions and values
Around 92% of mainland China’s population is made up of the Han ethnic group and the other 55 ethnic groups are scattered throughout the country with bigger concentrated areas in certain parts.
As you can see on the map all of the white areas is where the Han people are most concentrated but that doesn’t mean there aren’t many of them in the Tibetan or Mongolian areas.
My mom’s side of the family is of the Bai ethnic group and my dad’s side of the family is of the Yi ethnic group.
As you can see I’ve circled the Bai and the Yi areas and they’re very close to eachother.
The province they’re most concentrated in is the Yunnan province which is where Kunming – my hometown – is.
Not only does each ethnic minority group have their own traditions and values but they each have unique outfits/costumes
This one is the traditional outfit of the Bai ethnic group
And this is the traditional outfit of the Yi ethnic group
Obviously, these aren’t everyday outfits and they’re usually only worn for special occasions.
So in my early life, I lived in China up till the age of 6 when I moved to Canada with my mom because my step-dad lived here
When I was born, my grandpa planted an evergreen tree in our garden and named it the Meimei tree and it’s still there in China to this day even though we don’t live there anymore
As a kid I enjoyed dancing and I took lessons from jazz to hip hop to Spanish dancing and I’ve always loved drawing.
I loved reading and watching all the Franklin the turtle books and all the episodes of the TV show. It was the first book my grade 1 teacher gave me.
I met my first bestfriend in first grade and her name was Cally, we were bestfriends for 4 years until she moved away
Now, I live on Haynes Avenue with my mom – Ling, my step-dad – Arn, my sister – Lyonne, and our cat – Janson.
My parents met on an island off of mainland China where they were both teaching English at the time
My step-dad’s background is British so you can see that Lyonne would be half British as well as half Chinese.
Oddly enough my sister’s birthday is on October 10th and October is the tenth month of the year so that makes her birthday 10/10 and my birthday 5/5
Like I said, I’ve always loved art and I enjoy drawing and painting
I love swimming – it’s my favourite sport and I swam competitively before for a couple of years
In my spare time I like watching a lot of Netflix and my favourite shows like Survivor, The Walking Dead, The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, Dexter, Sherlock, The Amazing Race, Keeping up with the Kardashians, The 100, How I met your Mother, Fresh Prince of Bel Air ,etc.,etc. It’s a long list hahah
My favourite movie of all time would have to be Forrest Gump. Who has seen that movie?
Education wise, I would like to attend post-secondary at Ryerson University in Toronto to study graphic/interior design or architecture.
My dad owns his own Architectural Firm in China with him being the head architect so I suppose it’s genetic and I’m kind of following in his footsteps.
So that was all about me, are there any questions?
