People with disabilities such as amputations, spinal cord injuries, and cerebral palsy can compete in fencing events like epee, foil, and saber individually or as part of teams, similarly to Olympic fencing. Competitors use protective equipment including a jacket, leg pants, gloved hand, and face mask during bouts, and may use a wheelchair anchored to the ground. Sir Ludwig Guttmann helped establish wheelchair fencing as a sport for people with disabilities since the 1960 Rome Olympics.
