Shirk refers to associating partners with God. There are two types of shirk: major shirk and minor shirk. Major shirk, such as worshipping other than God, takes one outside of Islam. Minor shirk does not, such as swearing oaths by other than God, though it is still forbidden. Minor shirk also includes showing off in acts of worship. If showing off occurs from the outset, the act of worship is invalid. If showing off occurs later, the earlier parts may still be valid depending on whether the beginning and end of the act are connected or separate.
