DEFINITION
• A thesis statement is one to two
sentences in the introduction of
an essay that the writer uses to
“set the stage” for the reader.
• The thesis statement provides
the focus for the writing that
follows and lets the reader know
what the essay is going to be
about.
TIPS
• Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and should be
supported with specific evidence.
• The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of your paper or essay
• Often, some form of your thesis statement will reappear in your conclusion.
EXAMPLES
• A peanut butter sandwich is a much better choice for lunch than a bag of French fries because peanut butter has protein, is not fried in unhealthy oil,
and provides our bodies with more nutrition.
• Spring is the best time of year because there are more hours of sunshine, the air gets warmer, and flowers and trees bloom.
