Community land trusts (CLTs) are nonprofit organizations that work to ensure permanent housing affordability. A CLT acquires land and maintains ownership of it permanently for the benefit of the community. Homebuyers purchase homes on leased land from the CLT, keeping the cost of housing affordable over the long-term. The CLT monitors properties to ensure the homes remain affordable for future low-to-moderate income homeowners even after they are resold. CLTs have developed successful models for both single-family homeownership and rental housing to maintain housing affordability through ownership of the land.
