The documentary film will focus on the gender gap in mainstream film directing by acknowledging reasons for the shortage of female directors and examining whether gender biased language that portrays directing as a male role has created barriers. Interviews will explore the experiences of women in directing and how language differs in describing male and female directors. Footage will also highlight the work of an organization to increase networking and mentoring opportunities for women directors.

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Artefact:
The final artefact will be a 5-8 minute film on the gender gap in mainstream
film directing. The film will acknowledge all possible reasons for the shortage
of female directors but will approach the issue using auteur theory. The film
will ask whether gender biased language in the way directing and directors
are talked about, has created a “boys club” where directing is perceived as a
male pursuit.

According to her annual ‘celluloid celing’ study, professor Martha
Lauzen found that women comprised only 7% of all directors working
on the top 250 films of 2010. Why is it still a predominantly male role?
Drawing on your own experiences and the experiences of your
members, do you feel there is a tendency to use gender-biased
language which assumes a male as the director?
Do you believe men and women directors are talked about in different
ways? For example female directors are often discussed in terms of
their feminine traits or criticised for an approach that is too masculine.
