Though we think that Well-being in the workplace is a new concept, but you would be surprised
to know that it is a relatively old concept. Most MNCs and global companies have been
spending considerable time and money on Employee Wellness Programs. However, with the
onset of the Pandemic in 2020, the concept started floating across the business environment a
lot more.
Even before the Pandemic, we at Arogya Yatra helped our clients to plan and implement
Workplace Wellness Programs. Before we share how we design & establish a wellness program
at your workplace let us, in short, explain the benefits of workplace wellness programs.
 A health and well-being at work program drives the organization’s culture.
 Workplace well-being boosts the productivity of employees since the chance of them
falling sick is almost zero.
 Less absenteeism and more productive employees.
 Reduces financial burden on the organization and improves the overall financial health
of the business by increasing sales/revenue.
So, what are the key factors that affect well-being?
Well-being is not limited to just physical wellness; it also includes mental and emotional well-
being. Hence, it is crucial to balance physical and mental well-being. Since the workplace is just
a small part of our life, other factors like social and family life too influence/affect our well-
being. Below are some of the factors that affect well-being:
 relationship with partner, friends, and family
 career
 financial status
 physical health
 diet
 sleep
 spiritual or religious beliefs
 hobbies
The list shared above is not an extensive list and can be modified as per an individual and their
overall lifestyle. However, these are a few common pointers that affect well-being the most.
Now that we know what are the factors that affect well-being, it is clear that not all days would
be the same for any employee who is a part of your organization.
The least that you as an employer can do for the betterment of your employees and indirectly
your organization is create and establish a wellness program that would become a haven for
your employees!
Sharing some quick tips on how to design and establish a wellness program:
In his research, Jeffrey Pfeffer notes, “Companies that build great workplaces also improve
human physical and mental health and lifespan.” He estimates that unhealthy work
environments cost society a staggering $130 billion and 125,000 deaths each year.
1. Conduct assessment: Like any other program, the first step is to conduct an assessment
and understand the health of your employees and their interest area. This would include
evaluating their interest, need, and risk factors.
2. Gain management support: Once the HR department or the concerned department has
the result available for the assessment, gaining the support and confidence of
management in empirical. This ensures that the flow of funds, and approvals to set the
process and policies is a seamless experience. It also ensures that the policies created
would be in-line with organizational goals, vision, and mission.
3. Establish a wellness committee: Identifying and setting a core committee is the most
important task! The committee would help build organizational support and
effectiveness for the wellness program. They may:
 Evaluate the existing programs, services, and policies, if any.
 Remember the evaluation that we did to gauge the employee preference/priority
with regard to wellness? Well, this committee will assess the feedback received.
 Basis the assessment they would develop a plan, that would include a vision
statement, goals, and objectives of the program.
 They would also assist in implementing, monitoring, and evaluating this program.
4. Set aside a budget: How much are you willing to spend on your employee wellness
program? The figure needs to be shared with the relevant department and the
committee to ensure effective implementation of the program. This budget should
include the cost of incentives for participation, marketing cost, program design cost,
vendor fees, fitness trackers, HR, and committee member time, etc.
5. Design the program: The program should ideally involve activities like stress reduction
programs, weight loss, smoking cessation programs, health risk assessments, health
screenings, physical activities, nutrition education, and vaccination drives. These activities
can change as per the organization's structure and requirements.
6. Communicate: “It's important to have a sound idea, but the really important thing is the
implementation.” True, isn’t it? And implementation needs communication. You can
communicate the wellness program by rolling out eye-catching emails and letters, using
the pin boards, using logos and slogans, endorsing the participation of management and
other colleagues, etc.
7. Evaluate the success of the wellness program: Any plan or idea is incomplete if the
outcome is not measured. Hence, metrics and baselines should be established, and
feedback should be asked for on basis of these guidelines to measure the effectiveness
of the program.
A Framework for happiness & well-being
There are multiple frameworks and theories that are used to measure happiness and well-being.
One of the most used frameworks is PERMA - positive emotions, engagement, relationships,
meaning, and accomplishments. To the traditional PERMA, 4 new concepts of physical health,
mindset, physical work environments and economic security are added to make it robust and
empowering to the current scenarios. Working on creating a balance or helping the employees
to find a balance by ensuring PERMA+4 is imbibed and embraced is empirical for any
organization.

Conduct assessment: Like any other program, the first step is to conduct an assessment and understand the health of your employees and their interest area. This ensures that the flow of funds, and approvals to set the process and policies is a seamless experience.
