The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Welcome to everybody, I’m xxx and I’m part of Laumas sales department.
Today we are going to talk about weighing systems in many different sectors and what Laumas can offer you in each case.
First of all let’s do a brief introduction of our products range.
We have a wide range of standard load cells suitable for any kind of system and for any industrial sector, we have single-point load cells, shear beam, bending beam, compression, column etcetera. Our weight range starts from 0,25Kg up to about 1mln Kg, but even more in some case.
We can reach an IP rating of 69K and it is possible to have all our load in digital just adding our load digitizer model LCB.
We have also a long list of approvals, because to be more attractive and to be able to sell all over the world, we must have them.
Of course we have OIML approval form C2 to C5, we have NTEP for US and Canadian market and we have EAC PAC for Russian market.

We also have approvals for explosive areas like ATEX, IECEX and CU TR 012.
We have the capability also to make customized load cells according to customer needs, dimensions, compensation temperatures etcetera.
In order to install correctly our load cells, we have also a wide range of mounting kits.
To complete the weighing system, we have our electronics range, composed by indicators (recognize by the W letter) and transmitters (our TL serie).
In order to be suitable in many sector as possible, we have different software versions, different mounting solutions (front panel, ABS box, stainless steel box), we have also almost all the main communication protocols that you can find in the market (…..) and as for the load cells, we have different approvals: …..
Now let’s see the basic questions that we can use in order to select the right product.
Which is the industrial sector? (Food industry, chemichal, aggregates, logistics..)
Reason of the weighing, why I need to know the weight? (check a package, safety reasons, to fill a bottle, to check my stock)
Do I need a legal for trade system? Of course if yes, I will have to respects some limits and rules.
Which is the system full capacity?
Which the tare?
Which resolution I would like to have? I say, I would like because reality and wish, we all know that are a long way different (because fo the rules, because of errors due to the mechanichal structure…).
How many legs do we have?
Do I need a specific IP rating, due to water cleanings or humidity for example?
Again, do I need specific certification for specific markets?
Do I need a specific communication protocol?
Let’s start now with some practical examples…
Here we start with the chemical or plastic sector.
A classic small hopper used to fill 5Kg PBT sack, the system doesn’t need to be legal for trade because maybe the legal for trade scale will be at the end of the process.
The gross capacity of the sytem is 40Kg with a tare of 10Kg, the resolution needed is 5g.
As you can see we don’t have legs, but the hopper is fixed with an off center load cell. The Ip rating is not so important so IP65 is enough, no other certification needed and the comunicatioin protocol will be Profibus.
What Laumas can offer? As you can see in the picture, the diameter of the hopper is about 300mm so we have to chose a load cell with at least 600m*600mm of offcenter. In this case we can use an APL 50Kg connected to a W200 unload with profibus, if we want to manage the batching with the indicator or a TLB with profibus if we want to manage the batching with a PLC.
Second example.
Here we are in the food industry, a small packing machine to make 25Kg of flour sacks.
It has to be legal for trade, because sacks are sold by weight.
It follows the OIML R76 NAWI approvals, it means non automatic weighing instruments, so it is mandatory that an operator press a button to give the approval of each sack.
The gross weight is 45Kg, 20Kg of tare plus 25Kg of sack. As it is legal for trade we wil lhave a scale with 60Kg capacity and 20g division or we could also have 2 ranges 30Kg 10g and 60Kg 20g.
As food industry and flour, we will need an IP67 rating and the Atex certification for zone 22.
In this case Prfinet Io protocol is needed.
To make this system Laumas can offer our AZLI 100Kg load cell that as an offcenter of 800*800mm, atex certified together with our indicator WDESKRCX, Atex certified and with load software in order to manage the filling of the sack. We can add also Profinet IO protocol to send the data to a PLC.
Here we have another example with an offcenter load cell.
Logistic sector with a small roller conveyor used as box check weigher.
There is no need of OIML approval, we have a gross weight of 100Kg, 30Kg of box plus 70Kg of tare/conveyor. The dimensions of the conveoy are 600*600mm, we don’t need a high IP rating, no special certification. Communication protocol Ethernet tcp/ip.
In this case we can use our single point load cell model PEC 100Kg, with an offcenter area of 600*600mm connected to our WDESKLBP with Ethernet tcp/ip if we need a local visualization of the weight or our omega din transmitter TLB Ethernet tcp/ip if we don’t.
Another specific application is the statistical prepacked box checking, it is used to check if a lot of production for example pasta pack, respect the quantity inside each pack.
It is mainly used in the food industry, it is legal for trade. In this case we have a gross weight of 25Kg with 5Kg of tare.
As it will be legal for trade we can have 5/10g resolution with a capacity of 15/30Kg. We can solve this request with our AIN 30Kg stainless steel platform connecteg to our graphic indicator model WTABGB that has this specific software included.
This statistical checking of prepackages function can be used in accordance with Act no.690 dated 25/10/78 and (Italian Presidential
Decree) no.391 dated 26/05/80; check with local supervisory authorities if it is also applicable in your Country.
A common use of single point load cells is multihead packing machine.
Mainly used in food industry, in this example we have a packing machine to make 500g candy packs.
The gross weight is 3kg with 2,5Kg of tare, as food industry IP rating required IP67.
As in these machines there are always limited spaces, we can solve the problem useing our load cell digitezer LCB with profinet IO connected to our offecenter load cel model PRC 6 Kg, stainless steel and IP68. with this solution a PLC can manage the filling via Profinet IO.
Now we move to bigger systems and so bending beam and shear beam load cells.
Here we are in the cement industry with a big hopper used to make cement batching.
This plant is intalled in the United states so it needs UL approval, the gross weight is 2700Kg with a tare of 500Kg, 200g of resolution needed, 4 legs and analog communitcation.
Our solution will be to use 4 FTP 1000Kg load cells with the monting accessory model TF2000 composed with an antivibration kit. As electronics we can have different solutions: both can be installed in the field because inside their abs box, with our indicator model W200BOXCAP we can have the load software and manage directly the formula of the batching and send the data via analog output or with our transmitter model TLM8 we will transmit the weight data to a PLC with the 4-20ma and it will manage all. With our multichannel transmitter TLM8, we can connect directly the load to it, without junction box and we have few advantages: diagnostic of the load cells, weight repartition in percentage on each load cell, automatic equalization when we do the calibration and alarm in case of modification of the repartition of the weight, because it could mean a damage in the mechanical structure of the hopper.
Also in this case we have a big hopper for cements, but instead to be on legs on the ground, it is hanghing from a struscture from 3 points.
So with a gross weight of 1500Kg, a tare of 500Kg and a resolution needed of 100g, we can offer 3 traction load cells model CTL 1000Kg with their EM16DADO joints connected to our front panel indicato W100ANA with analog output as you can see in the picture.
Another common application is the big bag loader.
For example in the wood industry, it can be used to fill bigbag of 1000Kg of pellet.
In this example the gross weight is 2500Kg with a atare of 1500Kg, resolution needed 200g, we have 4 legs, an IP67 rating and Ethernet Ip as communication protocol.
Our solution is to use 4 load cells model FTK 1000Kg each with our mounting accessory PVZ that you can see in the slide all connected to: our indicator for front panel WDOSC with load SW to manage the filling of the big bag and Ethernet Ip protocol or to use our mutlichannel transmitter for omega din mounting model TLB4 Ethernet IP connected toi a PLC to manage the filling.
As already said before with the multichannel transmitter you will avoid the JB and you will get some advantages: laod cell diagnostic, repatition of the weight and automatic equalization during the calibration.
Always talking about shear beam and bending beam load cell, we are going to see 2 examples in the logistic industry, first one here is a roller conveyor to weigh pallets.
It doesn’t need to be legal for trade because it’s just a weigh check.
Our gross weight is 2400Kg with a tare (conveyor) of 900Kg, resolution need 200g, 4 legs, IP rating 67 and communication protocl Profinet IO.
Our solution is to use 4 bending beam load cell model FTP 1000Kg with 4 mounting accessories model PV connected via JB to our indicator in ABS box model W200BOXBP with Profinet IO protocol or if the visualization of the weigh is not needed near the conveyor, we can use again our multichannel transmitters model TLB4 Profinet IO.
In this application we reccomend also to use some horizontal restrain to prevent lateral movement, as you can see in the picture can be made also with threaded rods.
Our second example in the logistic industry is an automatic warehouse.
The weighing system is applied in the traslo elevator for safety reason, to check that the weight of the pallet doesn’t exceed the maximum capacity of the elevator and of the rack.
There is no need of legal for trade approval, gross weight of 2500Kg with a tare of 900Kg and a resolution of 200g.
4 legs, IP68 rating, Ethernet TCP/Ip communication and SIL certification that is about safety.
Laumas’ solution is to use 4 bending beam load cells model FTP 1000Kg with double wheatstone bridge with four mounting kit SNODOGE20AX that you can see here in the slide, it helps non planarity problems.
The electronic can be our multichannel transmitter model TLM8 Ethernet TCP/IP. We are also obtaning the SIL approval.
Now we switch to higher capacity system and so compression load cells.
The silos weighing is the tipical application, for example in the food industry to check the storage of raw materials. Here we have a gross weight of 30.000Kg, a tare of 5.000Kg, a resolution of 5Kg, 4 legs. IP68 rating, no special certification and Modbus TCP protocol.
Laumas solution is to use 4 compression load cell model CBL 12500Kg with its mounting kit V10000 easy to install and time saving in case of load cell replacement.
As electronics we again have 2 possibilities, stainless steel indicator model WINOXRBP with Modbus TCP and junction box or multichannel transmitter model TLM8 Modbus TCP with its ABS box CASTLG8PG9.
Here we have another example but in the Agricultural sector, where storage silos are very big.
In this application we have a gross weight of 150T, a tare of 15T, resolution 10Kg, 6 legs, IP68 rating and Ethernet Ip communication protocol.
Our solution for this system is to use 6 compression load cells model CBL 50T with 6 lower and upper base and 12 horizontal restraints, then as these big silos as many different feet, the customer will have to make their own adapting plates. Also here we have at least 2 electronic possibilities, indicator in ABS box model WDESKLBP with ethernet TCP/IP through JB or mutlichannel transmitter model TLM8 Ethernet TCP/IP.
Now we move forward to column load cells and another common system, weighbridges.
They are used in many different sectors to check the weight of trucks, tractors, containers etcetera.
They can be legal for trade or not, in this case ti will be OIML approved.
System capacity 60T, tare 9T and resolution 20Kg. Number of legs 8, IP rating IP68.
In this cae our suggested solution is to use 8 analog column load cells model COK 25T with its mounting kit model KITCOK.
Then instead to use a standard JB, we suggest to use our intelligent Jb model CLM8 (that will give you all the features af our multichannel transmitters) connected via serial port to our simple weighbridge indicator model WTABBL and if needed our weighbridge software for PC called PROGWBRIDGE.
The second solution will be to connect always via serial port our CLM8 to our advanced graphic weighbridge indicator model WTABBGE, it can manage databases of truck plates, products and customers.
In this slide we have a special application, on board weighing.
You could find it in many different sectors: garbage as in this example, food for in milk truck, wood for pellets selling, agriculture etcetera.
It could be legal for trade or not, in this case is legal for trade, our gross weight is 30T, tare 9T, 8 anchor points, IP68.
Laumas can fit also this request with 8 of our double shear beam load cells model DTX 23T with their mounting kit model VDTX connected to our multichannel transmitter model CLM8 and an inclinometer that allows an OIML apporved weight correction up to +-10°, then normally this system is connected to a cabin indicator or HMI.
Now we will see 2 special applications in testing machines.
Our first example is the automotive sector with a testing machine used to measure the tyres wear.
The total system capacity is 30T with a tare of 100Kg and a resolution of 2 Kg. Laumas solution is to use 2 compression load cells model CL 20T each connected to 2 separate weight transmitters TLBETHERCAT to be connected to an Omron PLC. Why two trasnmitters? Cause the scope is acquiring the data of every load cell and calculating the consumption of the tyre on the two sides.
Otherwise another solution could be to use our multichannel transmitter model TLB4Ethercat and read the 2 load cells individually reading the raw point through the PLC, this will mean more PLC programming because you will have to filter the raw points and convert them in weight, but it’s a possibility.
Our second testing machine is a breaking test machine, it could be used in the tissue industry for example to check the force needed to break a specific material.
Here we have a system capacity of 2000Kg, a tare of 30Kg and a resolution of 100g.
Our solution is our traction load cell model Sl 2500Kg connected to our front panel indicator model W200 with the USB option in order to store all the data. Then the customer can transfer them to his PC and use them as the wish.
Last application but not least, is the crane scale used in many different industrial sectors.
We will see 3 different ways to weight a crane scale.
First example we have a crane with a capacity of 20T, a tare of 500Kg and a resolution of 10Kg.
The communication protocol will be WiFi.
Laumas solution is: our pin load cell model LAU 10T assembled in the pulley, connected to our WiFi transmitter model TLKWF that transmit the data to the ground via WiFi to our indicator model WDESKLBP.
As electronics is possible also to use our load limiting device model TLU, connected to our big digits remote display model RIP6100.
The capacity of the load cell is half of the full capacity of the crane because the rope has just 1 return. So the correct selection of the full scale of the load cell to be used depends on how many returns does the rope.
A second possible way to weight, is to use tranction load at the end of the rope.
Our solution is to use our tranction load cell model CTL 12500Kg with 2 joints EM35DADO.
Third possible way to weight, is to use a load cell for wire rope.
Our solution is to use our load cell model FUN16265T2T OF 10T CAPACITY ON THE ROPE.
