This document summarizes the design process for regenerating Carnsew Quarry Park in Cornwall, England. The site has a long history of granite extraction. The designer explored precedents that addressed environmental reclamation and public engagement with natural landscapes. A proposed exhibition center would promote artistic collaboration and experimentation. Key elements include a tower, park/garden, and facilities to support various art forms. The next steps are further research and developing the massing and plans.

Carnsew Quarry’s history is very
monotonous and one-dimensional.
Its whole documented history is
invloved with heavy quarrying for
granite.

6. After analysing various photography
collections by Bernd & Hilla Becker,
I noticed a theme of layering of differ-
ent architectural forms and typologies
which were not only interesting to wit-
ness, but also told the stories of the re-
spective buildings and structures being
photographed.
These stories often include industrial
landscapes and structures having hum-
ble beginnings, often with gable-roofed
buildings that eventually expand with
more industrial structures such as
mineheads and grain elevators.
I want to explore this idea of
historical storytelling through
architectural layering by
fragmenting the photographs
of Bernd & Hilla Becker and
connecting it to my project.

7. This new idea of historical layering brought me to three key stages of the site’s history: the past
(legacy),thepresentandthefuture.Thesite’slegacyreferstothelonghistoryofgraniteextraction
and production, with one of its most significant benefactors being the Truro Cathedral. The
present is not very different, as it also ahs to do with the extraction of granite but I’m focusing
more on the structures and equipment present on site; the most significant being the aggregate
processing tower, the tallest structure currently on site. The final stage is the future, which will
be the realization this architecture project, specifically the pinnacle tower I plan on proposing.

8. My vision for the site includes the regeneration of the
quarry’s natural ecology so I believed a precedent which
addressed the environmental aspects of quarry reclama-
tion was needed.
Evergreen Brickworks exemplifies the idea of allowing
nature take control without implementing barriers for
the sake of human comfort. The natural environment is
encompassed by a wetland that has been given free reign
to flood the area, which transforms the way people en-
gage with the site. I think the idea of a public site being
dynamic because of the natural effects of the environ-
ment is interesting.
Thinking about how my proposed architecture for Carn-
sew Quarry can be more dynamic will also make it more
engaging.

Walkway is organic in form
- it contrasts the form of the
quarry but still compliments it
The Quarry Garden in Shanghai, China is a great
example of how to allow public engagement of a
quarry landscape. Even though this precedent lacks
buildings, the way the walkway contrasts the natural
environment while also complementing it has made
me shift my idea towards a more organic walkway in
my project. One that is more strategically designed
with not only the intention of transport but also
public engagement with the natural landscape at
various levels and heights.

INSTALLATION THROUGH COLLABORATION
The Exhibition Centre I am proposing aims to be a
playground for artistic experimentation and collaboration
between different disciplines of the arts. Through these
collaborations, creative students and professionals
can work together to create interactive and engaging
installation for the general public to enjoy. Collaboration
between different creatives creates new opportunities
for extraordinary artwork and gives the students in the
local area teamwork skills.
