Water Pollution

Water Pollution
Water Pollution occurs when energy and other materials are released
into the water, contaminating the quality of it for other users.
Types
Surface water pollution
> found on the exterior of the Earth's crust,
oceans, rivers and lakes
Groundwater Pollution
>found in soil or under rock structure or aquifers
Aquifer- is a layer of rock or sand that can absorb and hold water. It feed
our rivers and supplies much of our drinking water.
Microbiological pollution
>microorganisms that thrives on water and fishes
that can cause illness to land animals and humans
Oxygen Depletion pollution
>microorganisms that in water and feeds
on biodegradable substances
Ways in which pollution can occur
Point Source Pollution – it is a pollution
comes from a single location.
Nonpoint-source Pollution – a great deal of
water happens not from one single source
but from many different scattered sources.
Transboundary Pollution – pollution that
enters the environment in one place has
an effect hundred or even thousands of
miles away.
2 Main Ways of Measuring the Quality
of Water
Chemical Indicaator - to take samples of the
water and measure the concentration of
different chemicals that it contains.
Biological Indicator – examining the fish,
insects and other invertebrates that the water
will support.
Different Causes of Water
Pollution
 Marine Dumping
 Industrial Waste
 Sewage, mainly
from households
Different Causes of Water
Pollution
 Nuclear waste
 Oil pollution
 Underground
storage leaks
Effects on Environment
 Toxic water
 Thermal
heating
 Our sources
of water
Effects on Humans
 Diseases caused
by:
 Drinking
contaminated
water
 Swimming in
polluted water
 Contact with
chemically
polluted water
Effects on Animals
 200 turtles in Australia’s surround
waters die each year
Effects on Animals
 Birds and mammals become
coated with oil
What You Can Do
Turn off running water
Be cautious of what you pour in
your sink/flush down your toilet
Fertilize correctly
Participate in a clean up
Join a special society devoted to the
prevention of water pollution
