6.
7. It has been suggested that water pollution is
the leading worldwide cause of deaths and
diseases, and that it accounts for the deaths of
more than 14,000 people daily.
An estimated 580 people in India die of water
pollution. About 90 percent of the water in the
cities of China is polluted.
The WHO(world health organisation) estimates
that 3.4 million people die each year due to
waterborne diseases.
8. Water has the property to dissolve many substances in
it, therfore it can easily get polluted.
Pollution of water can be caused by point sources or
non-point sources.
Point sources are specific sites which directly
discharge effluents into them.
Industries, powerplants are the major point sources.
The discharge from non point sources is not at any
particular site.
Overflowing smalldrains, rainwater sweeping roads
and fields etc are the non point sources.

on planet earth.
It is 30 times more than surface water.
Septic tanks, industries, deepwellinjection, mining etc.
are mainly responsible for groundwater pollution.
Ground water pollution with arsenic, flouride and nitrate
possess health hazards.
13.
14. The major sources of surface water pollution are:
Sewage: emptying the drains and sewers in fresh water
bodies causes water pollution.
Industrial effluents:toxic chemicals,acids,radioactive
substances.
Synthetic detergents: Detergents used in washing and
cleaning produce foam and pollute water.
Agrochemicals: fertilizers and pesticides washed by
rainwater and surface run-off pollute water.
OIL: oil spillage into sea water.
Waste heat: waste heat from industries increases the
temperature of water bodies.
15. Fourteen billion pounds of garbage, which is mostly
plastic, is dumped into the ocean every year.
The Ganges River in India is one the most polluted rivers
in the world with sewage, trash, food, and animal
remains
About 700 million people globally drink contaminated
water.

jaundice etc. are spread by water contaminated with
sewage.
Mercury poisioning causes MINAMATA disease in man.
Nitrate present excess in drinking water causes BLUE
BABY SYNDROME.
Excess of flouride in drinking water causes defects in
teeth and bones, this disease is called FLUOROSIS.
Pollution by another heavy metal cadmium had caused
the disease called ITAI-ITAI in the people of japan.

reducing paper use and by supporting reforestation.
Don't deposit any waste or litter in any water system.
Use storm bins to save rain water for future watering of
gardens and lawns.
Maintain vehicles to prevent oil leaks.
