STORRS—A two-overtime defensive struggle between the No. 3 University of Connecticut
men’s soccer team and the No. 10 University of Washington Huskies ended in a 0-0 draw
Tuesday night.
Defense was the name of the game at Morrone Stadium, and All-American Goalkeeper
Andre Blake played all 110 minutes, saving every shot sent his way. UConn out-shot
Washington 11-6, but had one fewer shot on goal. Washington’s senior goalkeeper, Spencer
Richey, broke his leg with about seven minutes to play in regulation, and will be out for the
remainder of the season. College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com both named Richey a
preseason All American prior to his injury.
Not on the stat sheet were the many flip-throws from Washington’s Michael Harris
turned away by Blake and the defense.
“Those balls that the guy kept flipping are very dangerous, and for us to deal with them
that well, I think we did really good,” said UConn Defenseman Sergio Campbell.
UConn Head Coach Ray Reid gave a glowing review of Blake and the defense: “The
defense was very good tonight…you’re looking at the LeBron James of goalkeepers…he made
[defending the throw-ins] look easy,” he said, referring to Blake. The goalkeeper was happy with
the defense as well, citing the team’s goal to be known for their defense.
“We tell ourselves defense wins championships so as long as we can stop them from
scoring, then we’re close to winning,” Blake said.
In terms of offense, Reid said he was “not at all worried about it…It’s always the last
thing to come along…We have to get back to moving the ball a little better and [Mamadou
Diouf] more involved in the offense.”
There were four yellow cards issued in the match—three to UConn and one to
Washington.
“Washington—they’re a very tough team to play against. They’re very physical so we
went out there to be physical with them. If they come physical, we’re gonna be physical,”
Campbell said.
UConn’s next match is at home against Bradley University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
