3. Joe Novak enlisted in the Marines at the age of 16. After he turned 18, he landed in Vietnam two days before
Christmas in 1969 serving as a demolitionist where he earned the nickname “Rocket Recon.” Joe’s service in Vietnam was an
eventful one. He is credited with saving his Lieutenant's life (who lost an arm, leg and eye); Joe carried him out of Laos and
waited with him overnight in the jungle to be evacuated. Then Joe got sick with malaria, and while in the basket being
evacuated by helicopter, the helicopter took on fire and he was hit with shrapnel in the back and both his legs. He recovered
from those injuries and returned to his company only to be hit by an incoming rocket while setting up explosives around the
outside of his camp. This time Joe returned to the U.S. and served several more years training others.
Though he still deals with pain from his wounds, the affects of Agent Orange and PTSD from his time in Vietnam, he actively
serves his community through his participation in various organizations. He is Sergeant at Arms for the Vietnam Veterans
Chapter 542 of Harrisburg and a member of Marine Riders where he plays a significant role with Toys for Tots program. He
helps collect food for the food bank at the Feed My Sheep Church in Halifax. He makes sure to thank all veterans and current
service men and women for their dedication to keep others free. He speaks at schools and to other organizations about his
service in Vietnam and how no matter what life throws at you “to never give up”. Joe is a true hero!
