The book of Judges describes cycles where each new generation forgot the lessons of their parents and turned away from God due to sensual satisfaction. As the people broke their covenant with God, they were oppressed by other nations as a form of discipline by God. However, when the people repented, God raised up judges to deliver them from this oppression caused by their disobedience, forming a repeating pattern throughout the book.
