人間の可能性に到達できるスペースを作成
- 理想:全集中・絶え間ないoutput
- 現実:常に気が散る (メール, MTG, 等)
気が散るのが自然。意識するだけじゃ済まない

12. DEEP WORK と SHALLOW WORK
タスクは2種類に分類できる
-DEEP WORK ←この時間をいかに長くできるかが肝心
SNSやメールなどに邪魔されることなく作業に没頭している
生産的な時間(論文執筆, 提案手法開発 etc…)
-SHALLOW WORK
本質的ではなく注意を分散する作業のこと(メールの返信 etc..)
Humans are naturally distracted from hard work (such as research)
Willpower is finite. We can’t resist distractions forever… but we can minimize distractions
Types:
Monastic: Eliminate distractions completely (a.k.a. Checking email every 3 months). Philosophy of life for “individual” work (writers, etc).
Bimodal: Reserve “periods” without distractions. Scales: week or year
Rhythmic (habit): Reserve (semi-)daily “sessions” for deep work. Keep track (calendar)
Use the same time everyday. Not having to think
Journalistic: Any spare-time is a good deep-work-time. Requires training shallow→deep. Advanced monitoring of willpower and confidence. Not always the environment is right.
Strict rules to reach your limit:
Where you’ll work and for how long: Silent place. Clean desk.
How you’ll work: Environment restrictions and work goals.
How you’ll support your work: Breaks for food, stretches, etc.
Tips:
Make grand gestures: The more seriously you take it, the deeper (and more impactful) your work will get. It’s all about the mental state.
Open-office style is not recommended… but don’t work alone: Alternate deep work with “whiteboard” conversations (avoid a 24:7 open-office style)
Execute like a business: 4 disciplines/levels of execution (used by big companies to implement business strategies). Difference between what and how.
1. Focus on the wildly important: Focus on a subset of goals with the highest outcome
2. Act on the lead measures: Measure your efforts by, e.g., counting your deep-work hours
3. Keep a compelling storyboard: Track your efforts and plot them physically
4. Create a cadence of accountability: Weekly reviews to evaluate what went well/bad and why
Tips:
Be lazy: To succeed in Deep Work, the brain also needs “disconnection” moments of no-activity. Have a time in the day when you say “No more work today”. Reasons:
1. Downtime aids insights: Unconscious mind processes better unstructured, “abstract” problems
2. Downtime helps recharge the energy needed to work deeply: Attention/concentration is limited
3. The work that evening downtime replaces is usually not that important: Better use that time to fill-up your already-deplenished attention
