Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William George Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts as a less-strenuous alternative to basketball for the YMCA. Morgan created the first game using a basketball but played it with his hands instead of throwing it through a hoop, and the sport soon became popular as a recreational activity. The game was played on a tennis-style court and used a ball similar to a basketball.
