Port Development, Review of Maritime Transport 2014Manas Tripathy
Container ports saw growth of 5.6% in 2013 with developing countries increasing their share. The top 20 ports accounted for 46% of throughput and all top 10 ports are in Asia. Terminal operations are still fragmented but the top 10 control 37% of throughput. Port development is important for developing countries' revenue but less so for developed countries. The Panama Canal expansion was completed in 2016 to accommodate larger ships. Future vessels will be bigger, requiring ports to deepen channels and strengthen infrastructure to handle increased cargo volumes while minimizing environmental impacts.

The document provides information on the origin and development of ports including:
1) Ports originated as natural shelters for ships and have since developed facilities for cargo transfer between ship and shore.
2) Ship sizes increased rapidly from the 1950s onward, requiring ports to adapt through deeper waters and larger berths.
3) The rise of containerization and larger ships led to hub-and-spoke systems where large "center ports" connect to smaller feeder ports.
4) Port development is ongoing to meet changing ship and cargo transport needs through new facilities, equipment, locations, and operational changes.

This document summarizes a presentation on mega-vessels, mega-alliances, and their impacts on port operations and the Australian market. Key points include:
- Container ship sizes and alliance groupings continue growing to achieve economies of scale, posing challenges for port infrastructure and operations. The largest vessels now exceed 18,000 TEUs.
- Demand for container shipping has remained subdued in recent years. Major lines are struggling financially despite cost reductions.
- Australian ports currently serve vessels up to 6,500 TEUs, constrained by infrastructure in Melbourne. The opening of the new Melbourne port may allow sizes up to 10,000 TEUs.
- Further increases in vessel size deploying to Australia

In today’s class we are going to learn about a very important country. It is important for 2 reasons. First, it is where I was born! I returned to my homeland recently, so I will be including some of my photograph collection in this lesson. Second, Vietnam is a wonderful country with a fascinating history…
Vietnam’s History is very old Between 3,000 and 1,000 BC Roaming tribes from southern China moved into an area known the Red River Delta. Many Indonesian people were already living in the Delta. Together these 2 groups formed the earliest ancestors of today’s Vietnamese people.
Vietnam is a small country (about twice the size of Arizona) It is located in Southeast Asia Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and China are neighboring countries Vietnam is described as a narrow “S” shaped country The Ha Long Bay area has many little islands that provide shelter for fishermen Ha Long Bay is famous for thousands of unusual rock formations that can be seen sticking out of the water.
The flag of Vietnam is often called: The red flag with the yellow star, so that makes it very easy to remember and quite simple to draw or color. The flag was designed in 1940. The flag has 5 points and each point represents something important to the country. The five points of the star represent intellectuals, peasants, workers, traders and soldiers. The yellow of the star was chosen to represent the race – the people of yellow skin.
Vietnam is small, but the country has many different geographical features. It has mountains, tropical forests, rice fields, beaches, and coral reefs. So you can imagine that it also has many different species of plants, animals and insects. Because of the heat and humidity mosquitoes are a huge problem. When I traveled there this summer, I had to take medicine for malaria…that is a disease that is carried by mosquitoes in tropical countries. Vietnam is known for its beautiful flowers, especially one rare orchid that can not be found anywhere else in the world. Vietnam also has a wide assortment of monkeys, birds, fish, turtles, elephants, snakes, and even flying frogs.
Do you recognize this animal? They are water buffalo. When I was little, I rode on one and they are huge. The water buffalo are very important to the farms and they consider the animals to be extremely valuable. There are over 150 million water buffalo in the world and 97% of them live in Asia. The animals are use to plow fields, harvest rice, they are used as a source of milk, and for meat. They provide fertilizer and their dung is burned as a source of fuel and heat. If you travel to Vietnam, you will see water buffalo in the fields and on the farms.
Did you know that Vietnam is also known as the land of the Dragon People? This is because an ancient legend says that the people of Vietnam are descendants of the dragon. The dragon became the symbol of monarchy (or royalty) in Vietnam. Today, in modern Vietnam, The dragon is often used as part of the Tet celebration. Tet is Vietnam’s New Year. It is a big event in Vietnam…with lots of food, firecrackers, music, and of course a visit from the dragon. This is a beautiful picture of the country side that I visited in Vietnam.
Wouldn’t this be fun? Many children in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam attend floating schools! School is the same in many ways, but it is different, too. In Vietnam, just like you, the students work very hard and have a lot to learn. Vietnamese children attend school for six days a week – that means they have class on Saturday. The school day is much shorter – usually about 3 to 4 hours. The school year is from September until May. Usually school begins with a test. A question is given, and the students are expected to know the answer. In Vietnam, children learn how to read and write. They learn math, science, and geography. They are also taught manners and traditions. The students sit together, like here, and they study, but during their lesson they often chant while they are learning.
This is a street market in Vietnam. Look closely at this pictures and it will teach you a lot about the country. As you can see the women are wearing the typical woven hats that you often see in Vietnam. The country can be very hot and humid, so the hats keep the sun off. The women are wearing long sleeves – even in the heat. The women of Vietnam are more traditional that in the United States – they don’t usually wear shorts or sleeveless tops. The market is filled with lots of interesting fruits – like bananas and star fruit. The Vietnamese also eat a lot of seafood. When I was at this market, I saw lots of fresh fish, crabs, and eels.
The person in this slide probably looks familiar! This is a typical home in Vietnam. Poverty is a major problem in Vietnam so the homes are often much smaller than the homes that we usually see in the United States. In very poor areas of Vietnam, homes are made of woven read mats strung up by ropes. With the economy growing stronger in their country, more homes are being built from granite blocks. This home was made from poured concrete. The windows are open and they do not have glass like are windows.
There is a lot of water in many areas of Vietnam. This is a local pond where the men are catching fish for dinner. The Vietnamese often attach nets to long poles and then pull them in. The nets are heavy and it is hard work. Fishing boats also go out into the South China Sea. Sometimes the boats stay out all night and the fisherman catch lobster, shrimp, and fish.
When I think of Vietnam, I think of the rice fields. I played in the rice fields when I was a little girl growing up in Vietnam…before I moved to the United States. Rice is very important to the people of Vietnam. Many of the people are rice farms. Rice is a major part of the Vietnamese diet. Vietnam also sells rice to other countries. In 2009, Vietnam exported 4.7 million tons of rice.
Vietnam has many unusual things to see and do. I especially liked the water puppets. I bet you have never seen anything like a theatre built around a pond! The people that move the puppets and put on the show (the puppeteers) stand waist deep in the water, but are hidden behind a bamboo screen. People sit in the audience and watch the huge puppets perform in the water. The stories told are usually myths and legends popular in Vietnam. There are often colorful fish, swans, dragons, and traditional Vietnamese music with drums. Water Puppet Theatres are very unique and can only be found in Vietnam.
When it is nightime here it is daytime there Vietnam is a small country in South East Asia – it is very far away The plane trip from New York to Vietnam takes 23 hours There are very few cars in Vietnam. People walk, many ride bikes. In modern Vietnam, motorcylce traffic is very heavy in the cities Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam
Unless you have been to Vietnam it is hard to understand how very different it is when compared to the United States. Vietnam is a fascinating country with a history that dates back for thousands of years. The ancient people that once inhabited Vietnam have been shaped by many other races of people. Vietnam has experienced much poverty, hardship, and war. When you visit Vietnam, you can see that it has been influence by the Chinese, the French, the Americans, and the Russians. Vietnam is an exciting, colorful country. When I visited, the people were friendly and welcoming, they were very interested to learn about life in the United States. I hope you enjoyed learning about Vietnam.
