FORIMMEDIATERELEASE
(10/12/2016)
Former member of our Vets 4 Vets program, Sgt. Alex Gunter, to
speak on his experiences and honor his achievement of graduating
medical school.
PHILADELPHIA- Vets 4 Vets is proud to host a true hero in Sgt. Alex Gunter, M.D., a former
member of our program, and, as of last week, a graduate of Temple School of Medicine. Event
to be held on November 3, 2016, at 4 p.m. at our headquarters, 3236 Broad Street, Phila., P.A.,
19141. After an introduction and brief overview of his achievements, Sgt. Gunter will address
the media to include a personal statement followed by a brief question and answer session.
Sgt. Gunter spent 14 months in the program after he was discharged from the Army, where he
did two tours of duty in Iraq and one in Kuwait as a combat medic. After struggling with
insomnia and mood swings upon return to civilian life, his mother and sister convinced him to
apply for Vets 4 Vets aid. Sgt. Gunter was a standout patient, doing whatever was
recommended of him, and made a tremendous adjustment back into civilian life.
Sgt. Gunter impressed the organization so much that after his treatment was complete, we
brought him on as a trainee to help other veterans adjust. He passed our training program and
spent two and a half years employed with the organization while also attending Temple
University studying Pre-Med. He left the organization to pursue graduate school and attend his
clinicals full-time. Last week, he graduated with a doctoral degree in medicine, focusing on
neuroscience.
2. From Executive Director Gerald T. Williamson: “We here at Vets 4 Vets cannot say enough good
things about this young man. He is a hero, a patriot, and now a Doctor. He sets goals for himself
and achieves them. He embodies everything that Vets 4 Vets stands for, and we are honored to
watch his continued achievement”.
The mission of Vets 4 Vets varies by person: what their goals are, what their needs are, and
what society needs from them. Sgt. Gunter is a healer, in every sense of the word. He healed his
brothers and sisters in battle, he took the steps to heal himself, and then healed others just like
him, struggling with the return to civilian life. We have no doubt he will continue to heal others
as a medical professional, and are proud to see yet another tremendous success story come
from one of our own. We hope to highlight the achievements of such an extraordinary
individual not only to congratulate them, but also to raise awareness about PTSD amongst our
veterans, and extend to them available avenues for help and messages of hope. With
Philadelphia being home to the largest concentration of homeless veterans in the state, and the
veteran suicide rate soaring to 22 lives lost every day, any opportunity to raise awareness is
crucial.
Vets 4 Vets is a non-profit agency located in and servicing the City of Philadelphia. We aim to
help veterans successfully navigate transition to civilian life by providing re-entry counseling,
mental-health services, skills training and job placement.
