Some Spanish verbs have different meanings in the preterite and imperfect tenses. For example, saber means "knew" in the imperfect but "found out, learned" in the preterite. Conocer means "knew (somebody)" in the imperfect and "met (somebody) for the first time" in the preterite. Querer means "wanted to" in the imperfect but "tried to, attempted to" in the preterite, while no querer means "didn't want to" versus "refused to". Poder means "was able to, could" in the imperfect and "managed to, succeeded in" in the preterite.
